My cat has had an ear infection for the last year and a half. We keep taking him to the vet, and they treat him with anitbotic, which helps for a short time, and then it just comes back. One told me that he may have an ear polop?? But wouldn't know until he could see into his ear when the infection was gone. This still has not happened.
The last time I took him, they told me it was just dirty. I know that something is seriously wrong, because his ear smells really bad. And when he shakes his head, stuff comes out of it and goes everywhere. He is still eating and loves to play with George and the rest of my clan, but how long is this going to last, before he becomes really sick.
I am at my witts end, and about out of money. I don't understand what an ear polop is or how to fix it.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm far from being any kind of expert on this but if when your cat shakes his head and stuff come out, IF it's black or very dark looking it just might be ear mites.
I'm sure there are many others in this group with much more knowledge then I that can answer your question better then I can.

The best advice that is always given is: Take the critter to the vet... I know how that goes when one is financially limited. We all want to take care of our pet since we love them so much and the deserve it. But sometimes it's just not in our budget at the time.

Best of luck.

If after a year and a half your vet hasn't been able to isolate the problem and treat it successfully, perhaps you need to have a second opinion? Ear problems could be mites, a yeast infection, other infection from URI's, etc. If antibiotics are not clearing it up by themselves, you may need to be cleaning them on a regular basis, changing their diet, or many other things. A vet experienced with ear problems can tell you what to do.

Good luck - how frustrating for you to go thru this!
