I came home today and hugged Hayley like I usually do, and got blood on my face. It freaked me out. Her wing was bleeding. It stopped bleeding soon after and she seems fine. Is there something safe I can put on her wing so it doesn't get infected. I checked her cage for anything sharp, and didn't find anything. I'm worried that there is something though.

Poor girl! Do you think it was a broken blood feather? That would be my first thought. When Kirby had a cut on his foot, my vet said to soak his foot twice a day in Nolvassan diluted with water. It's bird-safe and should keep infection out.

Shockadine: Do you keep some "Quik Stop" on hand. It's a blood coagulant. Also, plain cornstarch works well to stop bleeding.
I have a budgie, Chubbee, who has very sensitive wings for some reason and occasionally they bleed when he flaps and hits them against the cage.
One day, I had a hard time getting his wing to stop bleeding even with the "Quik Stop" and cornstarch. My husband ran to the pharmacy and got me a stiptic stick an it worked fast. Later I was told not to use it too often on the birds because they tend to bite it off and it may not be good for them. But, when his bleeding is severe, I use it and later wash the substance off.

Try feeding your budgie thyme Mrs.Birdy. It is a natural coagulant and will help stop bleeding. It is safe for the bird to eat any time.

It may be that your bird just bumped her wing in just the right way to injure it and cause the bleeding.
My Goffin did just that when I was giving her a bath (which she hates) and upon lifting her wing I could see the shaft of the feather was full of blood. So, I called our pet shop and luckily the owner was there and she had me bring Angel in. It was a blood feather that was damaged and it had to be pulled - which she did for me. God Bless Maggie! If it is a blood feather and your bird should bump it and again start bleeding when you are not there - it could be disasterous.
In conclusion, you need to determine if it is a blood feather you bird has injured. If so - it most likely should be pulled.
Hope this helps. Good Luck!

so Shockadine did you have to pull the blood feather? If not has there been other instances where it has started bleeding again?
The reason i am asking is that i was told you have to pull the feather. This happened on Rikki's first night with me and i had to pull the feather (the only avian vet in 40 mile radius was out at a conference for 10 days!). Needless to say, i think i am still paying for it. She has been very standoffish and it seems everytime she
lets me get close something happens and i have to towel her! She has started letting me just barely touch the top of her head since we started clicker training. So who knows, maybe the ice is thawing. Btw use styptic pencils as a last resort as they can burn the tissue.
Diane - thanks for the info on thyme. i didn't realize that.Do you just apply it as a poultice?

I haven't even seen the broken blood feather. I'm not even 100% sure that thats what happened, but I haven't seen any problems from it since.

crazeemama,
The info on thyme was from Jason. I have no idea how it is applied - think I remember reading that you are supposed to add to food - as it works as an anticoagulent.

We woke up one morning and found blood all over the wing of our Goffin Cockatoo. I panicked and rushed him to the Vet. It ended up being a broken blood feather. My Vet said that I did the right thing by bringing him in right away, he said that birds can bleed to death when a blood feather breaks and not properly cared for.
I hope Hayley is doing better :)
