Hi all. My dog Shadow, she's a lab/dalmation mix but is always mistaking for a pitbull. I'd say 95 percent of people who see her think she's a pit. Is there a way to tell for sure if she could be mixed with that breed or I just get to play the guessing game? I got her at a pet shop and they told me she was lab and dalmation and nothing more, in contrary everyone will swear to it that she's got a lot of pit in her. Anyone who knows about or owns a pitbull, could you tell me some distict features or personalities they have? If you'd like, my signature has an address with pics of her, maybe you can tell me what you think. I'm just being curious and I personally don't know much about pitbulls. Thanks in advance.

She looks like she has a dalmatian head, really, some dals have similar ears to pit bulls.. She could be passed off as a pit mix, but personally when I look closely at her she could easily be just a dal/lab mix.

Hard to say, though. Pet stores that sell puppies are rarely honest...

In my opinion, Shadow looks nothing like a Pit. She definately looks Lab to me ;) . Pits have square heads and large, square jaws.

For what it's worth I think she looks like a lab. From the pictures I would say she is very loving too. I loved the picture of her and the other pets in the window sill about dusk....that is priceless

Thanks for replying. I don't see that she looks like a pit either, but I have rarely met a person that hasn't asked if she was, you wouldn't believe all the "arguements" I've got into explaining that she didn't have pit in her, quite frankly it's tiring, lol. :D A vet even has giving me a puzzled look when I said she wasn't a pitbull. Oh well, it don't matter either way, she's my adorable baby anyhow. :)

I would say no not at all , Alot of my friends have mix pit's and full breed pits and your dog looking nothing like it .. But your dog does have alot of "Dal , and a Lab" look to him.

I have a Vizsla/Dobie that is constantly mistaken as a pit mix. Its common for people to assume something based solely on general appearances.

While I dont know if there are accurate DNA tests available to determine specific breed mixes I do know there are tests available when it comes to wolf hybrids but I believe the cost is almost $2000 for results. I'll have to do some online searches to see what Im referring to as I cant seem to recall the exact test name or nature.

I adopted a lab mix, Keepher, for my parents in January and there were a few people that said to Mom and Dad that they thought she had a lot of pitbull in her. There is no way she has any pit in her in looking at her conformation.

I didn't see any pitbull in Shadow either. Pits have extra, large loins muscles; big nuscular jaws, small 1/2 prick ears (when left natural), big, muscular jaws, deep chests, and a square profile from the side. I didn't see any of that in Shadow, except there was one pic where her face looked a bit square - but labs have that also. Mostly Shadow looks Lab to me. I can also see the Dalmation in her body.

Long story short...Shadow is gorgeous!! Even if she did have some pitbull in her - so what?? The couple of pitbulls I have known were very nice dogs. I personally wouldn't own one but then my taste runs to Great Danes - HaHa.

Shadow looks like a dal/lab cross. on th other hand she has big cheeks compared to her muzzle and that may be where ppl get that she's a pit mix.
But pit mixes usually have a block head ( as well as other big headed breeds), and she does NOT have a block head.
Ppl are probably just jumping to conclusions, and nobody likes to admit they're wrong.
My big dog is a Shar pei mix. he's got the shar pei face, but the rest of him is just plain dog. my closest gues would b he's american bulldog/shar pei mix by the way he acts and how his body is put together. But ppl ask me if he's a boxer very frequently. i can't really see how they could say that with his huge lips, and concerned brow of a shar pei. i usually tell'em that he's a mutt and i am only sure of half his heritage. i let ppl think whatever they want unless they do seem to actually know a bit about dogs. otherwise i let Snorts speak for himself (in all his glorious goofyness).
i think i lost track of my point :o .... but it hink it was that ppl don't know their breeds as well as they think they do (unless they're insane about dogs as some of us here are), and to do your best to smile and nod unless they seem open to 'correction' or do actually know better

There is no test that can prove if a dog is part wolf. Their DNA is too similar.
