To train a new puppy to go on the paper ***

I personally skipped the whole paper idea. Its much like when you train a child to go on a potty seat and then have them switch to the real toilet. I used to teach classes for first time parents and we always recommended buying one of the seats that attach to the toilet to skip the middle step of a potty seat... The point I am trying to make is that teaching a dog to go on paper and THEN teaching them to go outside is adding an extra step and is often confusing for the dog. This can lead to a dog never becoming fully house trained and many professional dog trainers don't reccomend it.
Here is an article on both crate training and paper training. http://www.about-dogs.com/puppy_house_break_training.htm

PLEASE remember that when you have a new puppy, someone really needs to be home with him/her for the majority of the day. This will really help with potty training b/c someone will be there to scold (for a lack of a better word)the dog if he goes inside and reward him when he goes outside.

Good luck! We'd love to see a pic of your pup!

Good luck with your new puppy....they are so much fun!!! The only experience I have with breaking a new puppy to potty where it is acceptable is like mirrasmom said. Be with her as much as possible and work with her...like if you see her squat try to tell her no before it starts but if you are to late for that then you should scold her and show her what you are talking about (no nose rubbing though) then take her outside and hope for the best. This pretty well needs to be consistant or she will be mixed up for sure. Someone else might have an easier or better way....this is just my amatuer advice...Good Luck!

I totally agree with mirrasmom as far as the training you asked about. One thing I might add which I did with both my goldens is to immediately take the puppy outside upon removing the puppy from the crate. Once the puppy is done going I would praise it and reinforce with a small dog biscuit or a few pieces of dry cat food. You'll be surprises how fast the puppy is trained. Good Luck and many many happy years with your little one.

I also agree with mirrasmom... paper-training a puppy is teaching it to go on the floor inside the house. NOT a good idea! Using a crate, and frequent trips outside is a much better idea. There are many websites and books that teach how to do this.
If the breed is a small one, you may be able to litter-box train the puppy. I have a friend who trained her Yorkshire Terrier to use one, and they are having great results. There are even companies that make litter boxes specifically for dogs.
Good luck to you and your new puppy. I hope that you bring each other lots of joy.

Never train your puppy to go on the paper. That will become the place he will go all the time and trying to train him later to go outside will be very difficult. If you want to teach your puppy something that will make both you and your little buddy's lives much easier, litter train him. It's actually very easy if you start when they are little. here's how I did it.

1. Start with crate training. When he needs to take his miracle pee in the morning (I call it that because no matter how often you walk him prior to putting him to bed he always has to take that miracle pee in the morning) quickly take him from the crate and place him in a plastic tray (large enough for when he gets older) and don't let him out until he pees. When he does, praise him and give him a treat and make a big fuss over him. *Note, keep the tray next to the crate.

2. Do this everyday, without exception until he does it on his own and starts to use the litter box as his regular place to go pee. Reward him each time he uses it on his own. **In the beginning only use this technique for his morning pee. Always walk him at his usual times throughout the rest of the day.

*Remember that dogs will not pee and poop in the same place so he will not use it to poop in. But generally speaking dogs can hold their poop better than they can their pee.

3. Try to use the litter box with less regularity as time goes by thereby encouraging him to go outside more. Eventually the litter box will become an option to your puppy and a convenient place for him to go when taking a walk outside isn't practical.

Ikea has a good selection of plastic boxes under the name "Slugis" which are sturdy enough and come in various sizes. Don't use kitty litter. Your pup may try to eat it. Just wash the box out after each use.

Goodluck, if you have any questions email me.
