Hi
Did you know that grapes are very deadly to your animals. There is a toxin in them that is very deadly and only a few grapes can kill them. That scared me becuase i have grapes that grow in my back yard good thing we have a gate that seperates the dogs from the grapes. If you didn't no this please reply i would really like to know who didn't know about this.

I knew about it, but I also have grapes that grow in my yard... Ripley eats one every once in a while if he finds a firm one on the ground (he hates the ones that are soft) and it doesn't harm him, but I think anything like that in excess can really harm a dog.

Raisins I heard have a higher concentration of the toxin than grapes do.. Unless I'm getting that mixed up..

I only recently found that out but it is a good thing to post for people who don't know. Amazing that a grape of all things can do a dog harm!

No, I did not know this. Glad I don't buy many grapes since I tend to feel sorry for my doe-eyed doggies and feed them a bite of whatever I may be eating.
Thanks for the heads up!
Renee

Rip's Girl !
When the grapes are on the vine they are more toxic! Becuase when they turn into raisin's some of the toxin comes out.
I want to thank the people so far for writing to me.

I didn't know that grapes are bad. I usually give a couple of grapes to our birds (but not very often because I've heard they have a very high sugar content) and of course the dogs gets some too. Our ferret absolutely loves raisins so we give him a few each day.

When you say that grapes are bad for animals, do you mean just for dogs or for every animal?

I didn't know that until a few months ago. I had given Capone a grape a few days before that, but he never ate it, just kept spitting it back out! LOL

Are they toxic to birds as well?

Dalchick -- Thanks for the info. Ripley can't reach the grapes on the vines thankfully, but I'll be watching him to make sure he doesn't try to grab any. :D

Judy, I don't think their toxic to birds. I remember doing research on Goffins before I got Barney and they were talking about how Goffins like to play with grapes. Does anyone know for sure if they are toxic to birds??

Ya i think there ok for birds becuase they have something inside of them to pertect them from those toxins. But your cats and dogs they are deffinently dangerious for them.

I have heard this before, but I have fed grapes to my finches because I have read they can be good for them because they need some fruits. They didn't eat them, so I don't feed them to them any longer. I guess no one should take a risk feeding them to birds (or dogs and cats) but I don't actually think they would harm birds. I also know that raisins are good for chinchillas as long as you feed only one or two a day. I don't feed my chinchillas raisins everyday, but usually at least every other day. See raisins if fed to people a lot causes diarreha and it can do that for animals, but if fed only a couple of raisins it actually is healthy because it helps the digestive tract stay clean. Now grapes before they are raisins I cannot be sure of though. That's about all I can say.

ok here is the skinny i did some research and ask my vet and they said birds it is ok with and some other animals but dogs and cats it is very drastic and can really harm them and kill them. thank you all for reading and repling for my post.
