He's 3 years old and hasn't had this problem before up until about 2 weeks ago. He goes pee in the box just fine, but defecates a few feet away from it. the litterbox is always kept clean. also, he used to go to the restroom even if there were people around, but now it only seems as though he's defecating when everyone's in bed (so we wake up to find it) outside the box. I took him to the vet who said it was a behavioral issue, but i'm stumped because nothing different has changed in the house. I need help! anyone have any ideas as to why he's doing this?

[I]My deceased cat would defecate in his box but would pee on the carpet. The vet (the one that my sis and I no longer go to) to said behavioral issues but I never found out what the issues were. Nothing had really changed in the home or anything for him to be doing that. He'd been doing it for about 2 yrs and I sure did have the cleanest carpets ever from shampooing frequently! I thought maybe he no longer liked the litter we were using and I tried different ones. He'd be good for awhile and use it but then it would start all over again. His box was always kept clean. I hope someone can help you!

Try giving him a second litter box, my boys like to pee in one and pooh in the other one. He could also be stressed about something, have you gone on vacation, had workers in the house, any changes at all could stress out an otherwise normal healthy cat. Best of luck, but do try the second litter box. I hope it helps, let us know.

Any changes in the litter? If not and you do get a second box, try a different brand and see if that helps. I have 4 cats and 5 boxes. They often do one job in one box and the other job in another box. Maybe just a second box will help.

Any new pets introduced to the family. We have a Calico (not sure how to spell the name) and when we introduced our Siamese, she started doing that because she had to have her own litterbox and refused to share it. We tried talking to her but she wouldn't listen :D

Good luck

You might have to get all tile in your house....easier to clean. :D

Frankie never poo poo's on the floor but I do find urine outside her box on the papers or out far enough sometimes to get on the rug...hmmm..all this time I was thinking she was not getting up far enough in the box so it sprays out on the floor...maybe she is doing it on purpose...I will be watching her a little closer. Her litter box is in the utility/junk room...hahahaha....so I usually do not see her when she goes but I will try to listen for her to see just exactly what her problem is.
