Hi all,I am having a problem with sunni eating? I mean before she always ate everything I gave her. Now she eats nothing I give her. Could it be molting? I mean do your birds not eat alot durning molting time? Thanks.

I have never noticed any change during molting season. I have noticed sometimes they hardly touch food. Usually this only lasts a day and occurs when they don't like what we give them.

Yes, I have noticed a difference in Snickers' (my tiel) appetite during molting. She picks a lot more and eats less frequently. There are days where she seems to eat nothing at all. Then there are days she picks what she likes most. Luckily, I haven't noticed weight loss. She just eats when she wants to. I hope her molting period is almost over...it seems like it is lasting forever this season.
My Budgies and Pionus are all molting at the same time too. I could fill a pillow with feathers this season.
Does anyone else notice that their bird/birds are molting more than usual this year?

Gail,
Jason & I are sitting in my office (lunchtime) and discussing your Sunni not eating. First is Sunni drinking more then usual - I notice that during hot weather I tend to need more fluids and eat less.
Seems strange that Sunni is having similiar symptoms as Prettygirl. You moved Prettygirl to your bedroom (I think) and she seemed to revive............this leads me to wonder if there is anything in birdroom different then usual? Say maybe a room deodorizer or a scented candle ........anything like that. Or even if your neighbors may have used pestisides or painted recently and the smell drifted into open windows ...............just some ideas to think about. Remember you are a great birdie mom. Sometimes we may not even notice a slightly unusual smell as we are much less sensitive to these things then our birds - but it may be enough to effect our birds.

Well My husband did paint the living room. We had the fan on blowing it out the window. They are down the hallway in another room. I had the door shut. I also have a celling fan I just turned on today. Pearl was scared but as I spoke to her she is fine. This morning she is trying different foods. I mostely thought that it is molting. Pretty girl really takes it hard. Her feathers like Roseanne said I could make a pillow with hers. But thanks for the help I will take notice if anything different there. I don't really use sented candles near them or thibgs like that. I know the dangers. I did although mop my laubdry floor with pinesol, but they were in their room w/door shut? Maybe that affected them? I will be more careful. Thanks. Gail

Casegura,
My birds react the same to eggs as yours, sometimes they can't get enough and the next time you would thinK I was poisoning them or something! I will try the brown eggs and see if there is a difference.

My birds do the same thing- one day they'll love a food, the next they'll act like they've never seen it before! When I got Kirby he was head-over-heels about carrots, which I was absolutely thrilled about. After a few weeks though, he quit eating them. Now he does again, though not so enthusiastically. Gail, feel Sunni's keel bone daily and see if you can notice any weight loss. Also it might help if you have her with you when you're eating healthy foods during meals, and see if you can convince her it's really tasty and see if she'll try it.

I've read that the best way to follow your birds health is with an accurate scale. Birds hide their illness' as long as they can (or else they'd be easy targets in the wild) so by the time they show visible signs of illness, they may be in pretty bad shape. Somewhere on this board I read there are good scales at Target or Wal Mart, I forget which, for $20. I need to get one myself.

Feel the breast bone and see if it sticks out more than usual. I can feel it on all of my birds, but it does not stick out far. Especially on Taz, because he is a bit chubby.

I have noticed yesterday that Tweety ate hardly anything at all, however this morning when I placed my hand into her cage with the bowl of seed she did not wait for me to put it down. She jumped on my hand and started eating immediately. Also Taz slowed down on eating, but I think it is because we ran out of his favorite seed.
