I'm crossposting a little off my forum to help get this board going. ;)

For those that give their dogs rawhides or are unaware, please read!

Over the past several months I've come across new concerns about rawhides as well as cow hooves, pig ears and other dried and processed treats found in pet stores. Though they have been a popular chew for many years and have been considered safe, I've read time and time again of dogs getting blockages from eating these things, choking, and having other serious problems. Rawhides also leave a slimy coating on the teeth which is NOT good for the teeth.

There are definite risks associated with these treats, however. All three types are supposedly made of digestible animal products. However, they are digested quite slowly and, if consumed rapidly, can cause either vomiting or diarrhea from the many pieces still sitting undigested in the GI tract. If the treats are swallowed whole or in large chunks, there are additional dangers. Rawhide chews can lodge in the throat and cause choking, or a large piece may be swallowed, scraping and irritating the throat and esophagus on the way down. Once in the stomach or intestinal tract, a large piece of rawhide can also create a physical obstruction. An additional danger that is less widely known is the practice, in some countries, of using an arsenic-based preservative in the processing of rawhide toys.

It also talks about the dangers of cow hooves and pig ears.

Personally, the only thing I've given my dog are pig ears which she got gas from, and I haven't given her any in a long time. She now gets "Grade A" beef knuckle bones from the grocery store. These are actually quite safe but I supervise to be on the safer side (these shouldn't be given to smaller dogs, which can chew smaller bones) They are excellent for cleaning tarter from the teeth.

Please read these articles to learn about giving dogs raw meaty bones (NOT cooked!)- a great alternative to the traditional chews - these are NOT dangerous like vets and people will lead you to believe. You just need to make sure you know what to give and how to go about it safely.

Although the article says pig ears and cow hooves are bad..it's the store bought kind that's been treated and overly processed you have to worry about. I know of people who let their dogs get FRESH cow hoove trimmings and it is perfectly safe. *Naturally preserved* pig ears can also be a safe chew. Here's a great place to get dehydrated goodies..they're not pleasant looking, but they're supposed to be great chews for dogs *and cats!:

Ya know I was wondering about a lot of this stuff. My dogs LOVE pig ears. Lately I bought a bag of rawhide chews instead. Daisy vomited one day, then Levi next. I wondered if it was the chews, that was the only thing I had changed in their diet.
Refrained from giving the chews to them and neither have been sick. I dunno, they coulda got into something out in the yard.
