I decided to take some new pics of the boys today.

Dots was pretty cooperative about it:

But Goob had other ideas:

Think he's trying to send a message?

Thanks everybody!

I actually tried to think of some kind of prop to use for Labor Day, but didn't have anything around the house that would work. Still, I'm really happy with the way these turned out. Poor Goob, I didn't have the right letters to spell out his name, but I think his expression fits the word I chose.

I love your ratty photo shoots!! They're brilliant. And I'm not just saying that, they really are. (I'm sure you're aware.)

And your rats are simply adorable. I love them to bits. Such characters, and so cute!

Your ratties are actually quite adorable. Two years ago, I staunchly insisted that I did not like rats and did not ever want to own a rat. Since then, I guess I've spent too much time here... because I've actually caught myself contemplating a trip down to our humane society to apply and wait for a rattie or two to show up... See the kind of rattie-longing you're fostering? ;)

Thank you for sharing - they're really great. I am totally a fan of Goobs... You did a good job setting up the shoot. Getting anything to sit anywhere you actually WANT it to sit for a photo can be... challenging... on a good day.

They really are wonderful pets (including Goobers and Dots, I've had 20 of them and could never see myself without one). But if you do decide to make that leap, do your research and make sure you're ready for it. They're a joy to have when they're healthy, but they are prone to a lot of health problems.

Wiz-

Thanks for compliments. Though, trust me, for every good photo I get, there are tons of bads one. Thank goodness for digital cameras - no more wasting lots of money on film! And I love them to bits, too. Well, more like chunks. 'Cause they're a little on the chunky side these days.
Well, okay, a lot.

But the ones you get are totally worth it. :D

Maybe you could put a calendar of all their ace piccies together and sell copies of them in aid of a ratty rescue or something. That's be ace.

Got any more for us to see? I like 'em a lot.

I don't think I have any new ones. I haven't taken any since those fourth of July ones I took of Goobers.

Feel free to browse their photo album on MySpace though:

Thanks so much for that, they're sooo cute!! I LOVE the one of the two of them snuggly wuggly together, and the one labelled "goob tries to match remy's pose." But all of them are adorable. :) It's very lovely to see such happy rats.

Did some more photos today.

I know it's a bit early for this first set and I was going to wait a few weeks to post them, but they're so damn cute I couldn't help myself.

The trick is to get a couple of fat lazy boys. It makes photo taking much easier.

I have a very fat hungry girl...and a very neurotic girl. :p

Actually, the real trick is to confine them to a small space.

I take most of my photos with them on top of a DVD case I have. It gives them only like maybe one square foot of space so they can't move around too much. I pile a bunch of blankets up around the base of it in case one of the boys falls or tries to jump off.

My husband saw how big your boy is in the Halloween picture and asked if our little boys are going to get that big. I think he's a little worried now. :D

Miss Vicky

Their sire was enormous, so part of it is genetics. But they're also a little overfed (okay, a lot overfed) and they're neutered so their metabolism is probably a bit slower than a regular male's would be.

Are there any advantages to having my boys neutered? I'm not even sure if I can find a vet who will do it in my area but I thought I would ask.

Studies have shown that they tend to live longer when they're neutered. I can't say from experience if it's true or not, though. These are the first neutered males I've ever had.

I have only had 1 male, and I had him neutered. He did very, very well.

So I did an early xmas photo shoot with the boys today. I was going to wait to post the results though (I plan on doing a Thanksgiving one, too. I'm just waiting for a prop that I ordered to arrive), but I can't wait.

Here's the best I could manage of them together:

Goobers by himself:

Dots by himself:

and a funny outtake from Goob's solo session:

It's not hard. There's a few tricks to it:

-Put them up high on something so they have limited space to move (but be sure to pile blankets up around the base of whatever you're using in case they fall).

-Give them a bit of time to settle down before you start snapping photos

-Lots of praise and treats.

At first Dots wouldn't stay in the box, but then I smeared peanut butter on the lid (He was licking it off his paws in the photo with Goob) and he was quite happy to stay put. I tried it with Goob too (that's why his tongue is sticking out in the last pic) but he was too busy licking it off to look at the camera.

I'll have to give that a try. To be honest, I think the only thing going through my boys' heads is that there are girls next door, LOL!

Ah, I see. My boys are neutered and I don't have any girls, so that's not a problem I have to deal with.

Did a quick Thanksgiving shoot this evening. I'm not thrilled with the results, though and will probably try again this weekend, but here are the best ones I managed tonight:
