When I got home from work today I looked into my aquarium and my dwarf frog had his little leg sucked into the filter tube for who knows how long. (I was at work for 8 hours). I pulled him out and he seemed fine so I just left him alone. Now, 3 hours later he was in there again, though it couldn't have been for that long. I think he was just weak. I pulled him out and his leg is all red/purple (bruised? Do frogs bruise?) He is still alive but his leg must hurt him terribly. He's not moving much. I have an old betta tank so I put him in there. Is there any thing I can do for him? I'm not sure if he will make it or not, but I want to help him if I can. This tank is small and doesn't have a filter or heater or anything. Can he even survive in this type of bowl? Any advice guys?

Nevermind. He he didn't make it. :( I thought he was going to pull through because he was using his leg and it went back to its normal color. It wasn't bruised, the suction had just pulled all of the blood to his leg. When I woke up this morning he was dead. Poor poor froggy pie.

Aw, I'm sorry. I'm not sure how he managed, or what caused it, but I'm sure he's grateful you got to him when you did.

RIP x

Poor froggie :( RIP lil guy.

Do you have any more in that tank? You'll have to find a way to stop it happening again if you have.

aw, im sorry to hear about your frog, ive lost a fish once before that was sucked into the filter, i wonder why they allow such a gap for fish/frog entrance... hmm

Sorry to hear about your wee frog. Fingers crossed it doesn't happen again or that you find a way of preventing it from happening again. I would just be concerned that fish (if you have fish) could also be sucked into it. You don't want to come home to that every evening. :(

Aw, I'm so sorry. That's such a horrible shame. It's probably every pet owner's worst nightmare, the thought of coming home to find them in distress, and knowing they were suffering and you weren't there to help them. :(

I'm so sorry he didn't make it. I hope you're okay. It wasn't your fault, this was just a tragic accident; please don't feel guilty.

RIP, lovely froggy. x

I had that happen to me once, and the poor bugger had drowned.

I felt terrible but it was beyond my control, and yours too, so don't fret too too much about it.

Poor little fwoggies!

To prevent accidents like this, take a foam filter sponge (I like the ones sold for AquaClear 50 gallon filters) and cut a hollow out of the very center, holding it upright. Make the hollow big enough to shove the filter intake down into it. This creates additional filtration space, and diminishes the flow for weak, slow moving or awkward animals, to prevent them getting trapped in it.

Thanks for the advice! Thats great. I hadn't even thought of that. The tube actually comes to a point and there are only little slots for the water intake that no fish could fit in. The only thing that would fit is an itty bitty frog leg. He was my only frog, his buddy died a while ago. I'm sure that I will get more frogs, later and I will make sure this never happens again. It was such a freak accident. I've always kept frogs in my aquarium and this has never happened. I bought this filter because of the type of filter tube- I knew my fish couldn't get in there. I never thought a frog would. I guess that is what pet ownership is all about- making mistakes and learning from so you can love and care for your pets more all the time. Its funny, those two frogs were always into something. If I was vacuuming the gravel, they would make themselves get sucked up every time. I think they thought of it as a ride, like a rollercoaster. Or they liked they panicked look on my face. I named them Connor and Murphy after the brothers in Boondock Saints since they were such wild little froggies. Sucks I lost both of them. Ah well, life goes on. Thanks for all your condolences. I appreciate it whole-heartedly.:)
