my uncle gave a turtle a while back and i cant not find what type it is. i need help. also as of 8/23/09, i found 2 football objects in its tank, it looks like eggs but im not sure help!
if they are eggs, how should i take care of them? do i leave them buried in dirt, like what alligators do? leave them in the water? have it somewhere dry and warm?
attach is a picture of my turtle from top to underneath, and the "eggs" and the ratio of the "eggs" and turtle and my hand to give you an idea of how big they are.
also 1 of my eggs have cracks on it, like if someone carefully got a pencil and draw it. the cracks are very tiny and thinner then hair line cracks, i barely notice it. what do i do about it?

if your turtle has not been around other turtles in a while, then the eggs are empty. those are eggs though im not sure what kind of turtle that is.

We are trying to ID your turtle. Where are you from?

My husband thinks its probably a species of mud turtle, Kinosternon subrubrum hippocrepis is our closest guess.
As far as the eggs, you could probably just get some peat moss, moisten it, and cover the eggs about 1 inch. Room temperature.
Your best bet is to look up a turtle/tortoise forum. People there are very knowledgeable and can help you better with ID'ing and taking care of the eggs, if they are indeed fertile. Yours look really good. There are very few reptile ppl on this forum, me being one of them, but we raise geckos.
Can you also take a picture of the plastron, which is the belly of your turtle? Then my husband can ID for sure for you.

i live in LA, but i got my turtle from my uncle. he owns a box turtle and a couple turtles that u get from chinatown, but they are really old and are brown color.
also the closest i got to identifying my turtle is a terrapin. box turtle and red ear slider. im thinking it could be a mix. because it looks like it has a shell like this box turtle shell http://www.wildlifedepartment.com/turtles/Eastern%20(Three-toed)%20Box%20Turtle.jpg
its skin is dark gray and has no yellow stripes as a red ear slider and instead of red stripes around the head , it has 2 yellow stripes on both side of the head. around the head is the only yellow. its Plastron is not yellow but black.
underneath pic attached.
also could you be more specific about the peat moss.

Yeah, no. These turtles are COMPLETELY different species and under no circumstances do they interbreed.

Peat moss is basically dirt you buy in a bag. We don't raise turtles, so you will need to do more research in order to learn how to properly incubate your eggs.

Now that my husband has looked at the plastron, he believes it's a Mississippi Mud Turtle. He has a degree in Wildlife, so I tend to believe him. :)

It is possible to keep them together when the turtles are bigger. Turtles take forever to grow, so I'd just plan on setting them up in their own space.
