Well, my goldfishies are doing well. Besides a very cloudy tank, let the boyfriend feed them once, not pretty.

Anyways, they are fan tailed gold fish. On the end of Hootie's fins they are turning black, and around his mouth is turning black. Is that normal? I've had them for a month or so, it's just started happening a week ago.

Yes, I am very creative name wise. No I'm not. haha. Help? So far there are 2 goldfish and one algae eater. Names: Goldfish one: Hootie. Goldfish two: Blowfish. Algae eater: Andthe. :p

It is normal. For some fish.

I have a Black Moor Goldfish, who was solid black. Well, three years later he is solid gold. :)

...this is baisically because we have bought fish from 'fish mills'. Much like BYB's and Puppy/Kitten Mills. They aren't quality fish, they've got...funk genes and inbreeding issues.

It also could be stress, and when hubby looked this up, it was recommended that changing 1/4 of the water daily for a week, removing food material from the tank would help. Is there any way to separate the one from others? Putting it in a separate tank might help, too.
You might want to try Googling the problem of the goldfish discoloration, and see what you come up with. Or, you can call a local pet place that specializes in fish and ask them.
I hope you find an answer...let us know how it's going, okay?
Purrs and best wishes,

I do have a small, and I mean small, tank. I think it's 1 and a half gallons. Should I isolate him/her in it for a week or so and see if it clears up? or should I just clean the water first and see what happens?

She still eats, swims around, and comes up to "kiss" my finger. I just don't understand.. I have also had a black moor that had orange specks come up over time, maybe it's the case with her.. I just don't want to not do anything and then it be too late, ya know?

I was worried it was fin rot, but it would be fin/mouth rot, and I don't think that's possible.

yeah, I have a fish I call Lenny. I named him lenny because he was so plain and looked like a carp. he was gray when I got him, then, as the tank aquired more algae he became the most beautiful goldfish. along his back and the tips of his fins turned black, the black on his back faded into gold, which faded into a tiny bit of silver on his belly.

He was beautiful. now that they have a new tank and a functioning water filter he's fading again. he's now Lenny the weird yellowish fish with slight hints of what used to be black.

and, all the other fish in the tank (all two) are fine no problems. I'm pretty certain its no reason for concern, if it was, Lenny would be dead, my fish always choose death over any other alternative.
