View Full Version : Is Lysol Safe for Birds?
I want to know because one book said it was ok and another said it was dangerous. When I get my bird, I want to disinfect the cage with it but I'm not sure that it is safe. I use it around my cat and it scares him but dosen't hurt him. I know that birds respitory systems are delicate but......

I would be careful about using lysol around your bird - not sure if it is safe - but I would opt to be on safe side and use something else.
When we got our first bird & used cage we were advised to mix together a bleach and water solution and disinfect with that. Then rinse off really well.
I will ask Jason if he remembers the exact dilution of water to bleach and have him post it.

I think I read somewhere that it's not safe around birds, which wouldn't suprise me.

It is not safe, however if you need to clean the cage just take the dirty part and put it in the bath tub. Put in hot water and 1 or 2 capfuls of bleach. You don't need to fill the tub, just use enough water to get it clean. Next drain the dirty water and use fresh water to rinse it thoroughly. Last let it dry and then place it back in the cage. This is how I clean the cage and it has worked well.

We have been told by our vet that we need to add apple cider vinegar to her water. It is supposed to cure a problem she has with a yeast. So of course I mentioned parrot.com and our disscusion. He said that just to use it because you can won't do anything. It isn't like giving the bird nutrients. All it does is kill yeast in the water. But that is a good thing.

Lysol belongs to a group of disinfectants called Phenols - They pretty much kill everything. - As long as you wash the cage first and use the lysol at the recommended dilution and let sit for however long it says 10 - 30 minutes perhaps then RINSE VERY WELL, If possible i would set the cage outside to dry off and air out some more.

Birdygirl,

I know most of you will be upset to hear this! But I had 2 parakeets. I used everything around them. nice smelling candles, and moped the floors, and laundry det and all that! Incense and sprayed the rugs with the cleaner. I never had a problem with them ever. In fact they died of old age at the age of 13. They were alway by a window and looking out. I think that sometimes we all worry way to much about what to use for cleaning. more worry and then things happen. I feel. Not to say this is okay or anything. I just didn't really know about all the dangers. But have any of you ever, thought about what you use for laundry det> I mean they sit on our shoulders and all that? How bout what we use for shampoo? Or the makeup we use? It seems that we all worry way to much huh? My birds prean my hair have any of you wondered about hair spray? These are probably more dangerous then windex?

Good statement Redstorm.
I also think birdpeople worry too much. I worry more about my FIDS than I did when raising my own KIDS. Well, in a way, I guess it is a good thing we worry, don't you agree.

Sorry I don't agree. Worry causes alot of problems, with our stomachs and depression, that some are so unawhere of. Its okay to worry a little, but not to freat about everything. I know, I experience alot of the stomach probs! But I have learned to not listen to everything I hear about birds. The vet explained to me not to. Its just a way to help yourself and your birds. I also learned that my children need to learn on their own, I am trying not to worry so much. I have found that my kids and birds do much better. I donot note everything any more. Mrs. Birdy, what does fids mean? I am sorry if I sound ignorant. Thanks.

Gail, I agree with you that sometimes people worry too much when it comes to birds and keeping the air totally free of stuff like that. When I'm driving I see birds rigth by the side of the road right with all the car exhaust fumes that make me gag, but they're fine. It's good to be on the safe side of course, but not good to get so overboard with worry that it makes you sick.

I know I worry too much, but I think it's because birds are so fragile. They're so light and airy like angels from heaven or some other magical creature.

OMG, today I was at my vet clinic working all day, and when my mom came to pick me up she was telling me about her day and then said "Oh, the 'bug-man' came and fogged your room and the others for brown-recluses!!" I couldnt' believe it, and of course was worried sick about all my poor birds! I hate the fact that we have a million and one brown recluse spiders crawling around our hosue, but I was so worried that I'd come home to find all my birds gasping for breath. My mom said that "Mr. BugMan" said to just cover they're cages with a sheet and they'd be fine, but I was thinking, "What does someone who kills bugs for a living know about birds???". Thankfully when I came home I heard them all chirping and they were absolutely fine. *sighhhhh* :)
