One of my sugar gliders, Gizmo, absolutely hates dogs and cats. He will jump off of me, if I'm not careful, to attack one. I had set the glider cage down on the floor while I cleaned the table it usually sits on. My Walker, Rascal, came over to sniff at the cage just as he usually does. I thought it would be all right since it was daytime and the gliders were in their pouch, asleep. I smelled it about the same time Rascal started whining and backing up. Gizmo had skunked him. Usually only very young or unsocialized gliders do this when they are scared. They emit an odor that smells exactly like a skunk. Gizmo looked out of his pouch and made his "angry" sound, then curled up and went back to sleep. It was as if he were saying "Take THAT. Now leave me alone." After I stopped laughing, I couldn't coax Rascal back anywhere near that cage. Now, when he goes in the room where the gliders are, he just looks toward the cage and stays far away from it.

That's so funny. I have always wanted a sugar glider (among other things) are they neat pets? Where did you get yours? Are they hard to take care of?

You can't descent a glider like you can a skunk or ferret. Luckily, the smell goes away after a little and you can actually wash it off with soap and water. It doesn't have the staying power of a skunk's scent, thank goodness. Mishapip-Yes, they are very neat pets. I've had Gizmo for over 6 years and Sissy for 3 years. I know a lot of other gliders and they are all good pets, too. After you get them socialized, the hardest part is getting their diet right. They are omnivorous, but they need anywhere from 30 to 50% (depending on who you ask) protein in their diet. They also need calcium and as little phosphorous as possible. I got Gizmo from a lady that has a traveling petting zoo. She breeds her gliders every now and then to add stock to her zoo and I was able to talk her out of one. Sissy, I got from my best friend when she bred her gliders.
