Any advice about baby parakeets. My sister in law has 2 parakeets and just recently found out that one was a boy and one was a girl. It's because she bought each from a different pet store, and one sold all girls and one sold all boys and she didn't realize this until about 2 weeks ago out popped some 2 eggs from the birds. So now she has them under hot lights and should be hatching any day now. Does any one know how to take care of them?
Thanks in advance.

How long has she had her birds? Just wondering if she was already bred when she bought her? I do not know much about hand feeding but I think you should consult with an avian vet right away or at the least someone you know that has experience. I wish you good luck and I hope someone can be more helpful than I.

What do you mean hotlight? A heat lamp? Why didn't she let the parents raise them? Also I can't say much about parakeets but I do know a lot about finches. btw, did she check to make sure they are actually fertile? I was just wondering. Anyways for handfeeding, she will need to feed them a handfeeding formula. Most pet stores carry it and the most common brand name i've heard is Kaytee Exact handfeeding formula with a syringe or eyedropper (I'm not sure how big because I don't know for sure how big parakeet babies are when just hatched). Of course you already know they need to be kept warm, dry, they need some humidity though. A cup of water in what ever container you have them in will help. I don't know much about time between feedings or anything for parakeets, but newly hatched finches have to be fed about every 2 hours. I think if you search the internet enough you can find out for sure. Hm... I can't really think of anything else. I wish your sister in law good luck with them though.

Thanks for the info. I'll do that. I don't think the bird has bred before because she bought them from PetSmart but I don't know for sure. I think they've had them for almst a year.
