My husband found this turtle in the garage. It is just a baby - about 2 inches long (not including the tail). I think it is a snapping turtle. Anyhow, I gave it some food and water and then let it go. My question is this -

Doesn't it need to be near water? There are no creeks or streams nearby. I released it beside the garage under an overhang with grasses growing under it. I hope it will be okay.

Yep, it's a snapping turtle. If you don't have any water nearby, I would guess it's someone's pet. They don't do very well away from water long term, but it's very possible it will find water - they're pretty good at that.

Oh my... I should have given it to my sister - she has a 75 gallon tank with water turtles in it. I hope it doesn't die. Maybe it will find it's way back into the garage before my sister goes home.

They do travel quite a bit, it could have been looking for new water.

Oh my...don't snappers get pretty big? They do here anyway, not sure if an aquarium would fit the needs of this little guy in a few years lol
