I've been told that feeding rats meat makes them aggressive. I can't vouch one way or the other on that, so I feed them a few random things here and there.
The other night I was cooking for 5 and make a really, really good dinner. I decided to give Ratpunzel and Cinderratti my corn on the cob when I was done with it.
Now, Ratpunzel is a taker. She will take anything you give her and cram it down her throat to try and fit more in. Cindi on the other hand, is a licker. She LICKS everything! ...never bites, never takes...just licks and licks and licks.
So, naturally...the cob became Ratpunzel's in a short time.
First, Ratpunzel tore pieces of it off and ate them.

Then, once Cindi was licking more and more, Ratpunzel decided she didn't want to share. So, she decides to pull the cob down through a 2inx2in square hole.

While, Cindi licked away on the other side.

Ratpunzel was having the worst time manipulating the corn...she could not get it through the hole. I think she was getting frustrated, honestly.

But, she finally managed...

But, alas...even that was not good enough. Cindi could still lick the other end. So, Ratpunzel then tried to pull the cob in the house with her...

But, that didn't exactly work out as well as she'd planned. She eventually stopped trying when Cindi got bored with licking.

i heard that giving rats corn can give them tumors, especially females. none of my ratties get any corn whatsoever, i couldnt even get them a little eddible house cause it had corn in it and alfalfa, alfalfa can block their poopy tracks cause they cant digest it too good. but they look like they enjoyed it very uch and congrats on ur girls they are both so gorgeous
ok to correct myself cause i couldnt find that info online, i was just told that, but
RMCA SAYS:
The Rat Health Care booklet by Debbie Ducommun reports that corn should be fed with caution due to high levels if nitrates and amines which can combine in the stomach to form nitrosamines which are carcinogenic. In theory, this is true, but you would have to feed your rat a diet almost entirely of corn for this to be a problem. You don’t want your rat to exist soley on any one type of food, but there really isn’t a problem with corn, other than too much in the diet will make your rat fat. A well balanced diet containing corn in moderation is perfectly fine.

That's interesting...I think you had told me about the corn before...but, I've never heard it anywhere else...until now. :p

That's sooo funny! They're so sweet. I used to keep gerbils and mice years ago but I've always wanted rats. Hubby is not so keen though :( They're great pictures! Pip

In my opinion, being alive causes rats to have tumors. Generations of inbreeding has caused a lot of problems, not to mention that most of the research that has been done with them has been geared towards causing cancer and other illnesses in them, not curing it.
In any case, your girls are adorable!

I agree with you 100%, Victoria. I even had a vet tell me once, 'I don't really know why you even chose to have rats. They'll all get cancer anyway.'

We have 2 hamsters with amusingly, a similar set of personalities. Teddy eats to eat, while Drew stuffs her cheeks and deposits it all downstairs in her cage. We clean the cages completely once a week and discovered a concealed pile of corn and seed =p.
They're adorable, thank you for sharing!
