My 4yr old retriever is having a hard time jumping up on my bed recently. But the odd thing is, when we go outside to play with a tennis ball he runs just as fast and jumps to catch the ball. Although he will do anything for a tennis ball, so I hope he isn't in any pain. Also he welcomes me when I get home from work by jumping up. What he does exactly is, he roams around the bed wanting to get up, he'll even jump up and get halfway up but won't actually jump up. I have to pick him up so he can relax/sleep on the bed. Any advice would be very helpful.

Thanks

I want to definitely keep him from ANY jumping/running/etc until you can get him in to see your vet. It may be that the tennis ball is not as high...or that it is not a straight up jump as the bed is. Does he have trouble with stairs, getting in or out of the car, getting up or down to a resting position?

Sounds like this could be something serious. I am hoping you find out soon and let us know. I think the vet is needed here also.

I agree, a vet is needed. It could be anything from hips, elbows, spinal, to torn ligaments or muscles. Enforced rest is needed now. Don't aggravate the problem, you could make it worse.

My 5 year old started having trouble jumping into my van, and over a hurdle. He'd still run and chase things all day. Two torn ligaments, and a torn thigh muscle. 8 months of rest, and he's still not 100% whole. It could have been worse if I'd not have caught it.

He can run up and down the stairs, he actually loves that. When it rains, to give him some exercise I'll kick the ball down the stairs. As far as the car goes, he loves the car and jumps in, getting him out can be a pain if he thinks we're going somewhere :).

When we play, I think he may be too focused on the tennis ball to actually feel any pain.

I'll schedule an appointment for next week and hold off on the exercise.

I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

Thanks for all the replies :thanks:

EDIT: It turns out he does have trouble getting in and out of certain vehicles. My car is lower to the ground. I called my parents, they picked him up last week to play with their dog and they had to lift him into their SUV.
