We just got George, a pure bred Shar Pei, less than a week ago. He was fine until two or three days after we brought him home. While on a walk he was really slow, which he had not been the past few nights. I noticed he was limping and decided I would just keep an eye on it. Over the past three days it has gotten to the point that everytime he runs or tries to walk fast he falls on his face. To us it looks like his front legs are not strong enough to hold up the rest of him and they cave when he tries to go anywhere fast (not a too fun for a puppy). His knees sort of bend forward and he rolls his paws over his toes when walking/running and down he goes. I have researched a few things on line, but haven't found anything that matches, as he has no pain, and his legs, knees and paws are not tender to the touch at all. He has been to the vet, had x-rays done and because his bones are young enough, they are mostly still cartilidge which does not show on an x-ray. He is on a good food, healthy weight and otherwise checked out just fine at the vet. Anybody have any ideas??? We would love for him to be able to play with our 1 yr old puppy again, just like when he first came home!!! Any suggestions or ideas would be great, as we really have no clue what this could be or what to search for to find an answer

Its possible that he has some sort of birth defect in his front legs if he doesn't use them as well as his back legs, or it could be that he is just really clumsy as a lot of puppies are. Maybe he sprained something and that would cause the limping. How old is he? I'd just keep an eye on him and see if he improves, puppies seem to always fall over their own feet.

the dvm was obviously of no use,-or-..did dvm suggest blood work for genetic defects,??./.is the limping, falling more pronounced daily/getting worse.??.just watch-body language- to see which way this goes..ie.improvements daily or get worse,..sincerely james waller

In the future, please only make one post about a topic. That way, you get all your responses in one place without cluttering up the board.

Hi and welcome to PL.

We like to keep one thread per topic as Krystal alreday said to prevent confusion. If we reply on one thread and a few days later see another thread without our reply on it looks as our reply was lost or something, while it is actually on the other thread.

I am very sorry to hear your new pup is having these problems. Have no idea myself what could be causing it's legs to fail like that. Did the vet do any neurological tests to see if purchance nerve impulses aren't getting through or something?

Edit note - I just merged your two threads so it is easier for all to track.

when he is standing still, lift one of his front legs and rotate the foot over the toes, let him put the leg back down and see if he corrects the foot or if he puts it down then corrects after. If this happens, there is a nerve blockage in the neck that is not allowing the nerve signal to come through. Usually a result of a slightly pinched nerve. I have had similar issues as you described in other dogs.
Just something to test for. Good luck.
