I was almost home from work, when my sister called me. She said lacey had bumps all over her (Lacey was outside for the afternoon). A few times she has gotten ticks, and they look like bumps under her fur. But she's has a flea/tick repellent on and I've checked myself, its bumps on her skin, not ticks. I am assuming mosquitoes at this point. In Dallas, we never had problems with mosquitoes, and this is the first time being back in fort worth with my dog during the summer time (my mom has lots of plants).

Petsmart's banfield is closed now, and I can't really afford to pay the min $100 for an after hours visit at the ER-Vet. I gave her some benadryl to help with the itching...is there anything else I can do?

She is on Adam's. When she gets ticks, that seems to be the only thing that helps and it should also repel mosquitoes.
We sprayed the yard last week, with Spectrocide, which should also repel/kill mosquitoes and ticks/fleas.

I can't look at her, it makes me feel terrible and itchy :(

My chai has had bumps like that before, it's a bug bite. Hers were ant bites that swelled up and she's had it on several different occasions.

Basically keep her cool, if you have a cooling mist like a diluted tea tree oil or mint mist then spray it on the spots. If not use an ice pack in a towel to help the itching and burning feeling. Keep up with the benadryl, and then if she's still bad tomorrow go to the vet for an antihistamine shot.

Best of luck.

Actually, those are called 'hives'. Basically, an allergic reaction to something she came in contact with. The Benadryl will help the most, since she's having a reaction to something in the environment.

Most products that get rid of fleas and ticks are generally useful in easing your pet of other insect infection. Consider both the product being used, and your pet’s environment. Use an effective shampoo with ingredients against fleas/ticks. Survey the area where your dog usually stays. There might be stagnant water that serves as a fertile breeding ground for mosquitoes. Regularly spray the area with insect repellant when your pet is not around.

I wonder if she is having a reaction to the Spectrocide. It's been a couple of weeks, how is your Lacey now?

First and foremost, not all products that do fleas and ticks treat 'other insect infections', in fact...some that do are EXTREMELY harmful. If you are using a topical flea/tick prevention, do not use a flea/tick shampoo. It's a waste of money, because the shampoo is so harsh it strips the oils from the skin where the topical prevention is sitting.

We had a dog come in today that had a serious burn from using Spectrocide. We'd never heard of the product...and I'm interested where it comes from...?

Did a quick search for Spectrocide and came up with this as the first of many links (hope it works)
http://www.pesticideinfo.org/Detail_Product.jsp?REG_NR=00183900079&DIST_NR=017217

Don't think it was meant to be used on pets.

Hmm...maybe it was not Spectrocide then? It was in a dog vial...said not in to be used for cats...was 10 to 20 pounds of dose. I don't know...it was sad, whatever it was. A few bucks saved with the OTC meant a few hundred spent at the vet to reverse the effects. Some deal...

Some 40 years ago when consumers were much more trusting, my Daddy used to spray the yard with Malathion. Our dog was brought indoors until it dried, but then right back out. When they were relatively new we bought her a flea collar, and the combination of the two toxins made her gravely ill. I was little, don't recall all the details, just that all her hair fell off and she came home from the vet painted head to toe in a purple medicine that stank.

That memory has made me extremely cautious in using any combination of pesticides. While either may be safe around animals alone, they could be deadly together.
