Basset Hound-slipped disc

My 9 year old basset has just had an operation for a slipped disc in his back (1 week ago) He has some improvement and the vet is hopeful that he will regain movement in his legs. I was wondering if anyone has experience with dogs with slipped discs who have had surgery and how long it took them to regain the ability to walk. (Preferably basset owners but any experience will be helpful)
