I was outside on the balcony hanging clothes on the line since it was so nice, and as I was walking back inside, i noticed something, hanging on the wall. A little ball of brown fur. As i got closer to see what it was, i realized it was a bat! It looks young, because it's so small, but then again, i know nothing about bats. But it's only about 2 1/2 - 3 inches long.

Hey, I noticed my bats out tonight for the first time too!
It was crazy hot today, 89 (F)! I sat out on my porch to watch the sunset and the birds going to bed, and the bats came out! yay!
Cool!

Well it is kind of strange for it to be in such a visible place. Is it gone now? should be flying around by now.
My bats live in the eaves of the house and if I'm looking in the right place at the right time I see them come out.

LOL!
Yeah I know, I remember April in Houston! When I visit, I like to go in early May, because I love the thunderstorms and steamy heat. It's been a long while though, I used to visit every year. but it's hot for here and my poor own Red Boy who is ultra sensitive to heat was suffering. That's a side affect of the phenobarbital, heat intolerance, and it has gotten worse as he gets older.
In fact I bought an a/c for him last summer, but it's not in the window yet.
But I'm happy about the bats cause they eat bugs!

I think bats are so neat to watch at night. We have a lot of them at my parents house in the boonies and I loved to site and watch the swoop and dive around the street light after bugs at night. It was 92 here today, a little too hot a lot too fast for me.

I love that name!!
but he should be out flying around by now. And if there are spider webs on his head...well that seems strange. Are you sure it's not dead?
Do you have any rabies there?

It's not dead, when i was taking pictures, it moved its leg, or wing not sure what it was, but it moved.
There is a light on the balcony, a few feet away from him so maybe he thinks it's still day, and that's why he hasn't left?

just read this and was thinking that that is quite odd but not, if it doesnt leave within the next day or so, i found a place for you to contact where you live, at the end of this web site it has a number to a rehabilitation place even if it doesnt seem like it needs to be helped, they can take it somewhere other than your house (maybe where other bats are) http://www.ontariospca.ca/4-wildlife-livewith-5.shtml
hope this helps, they also say about their wildlife rehabilitation center too on the left hand side

...on a serious note, do not touch him and do not let your animals near him. Just to be safe. Bats don't normally hide out in places like that, and if he's still there in the morning...do the poor thing a favor and call animal control.
By the way, I like that name, Aluminum. How fun!

Oh don't worry about that! I'm too chicken to come too close to him. I'd be too scared he has rabies or something.
I found it odd too that he is in that place, it's a great big balcony, with a roof on top, i'll have to take some pics to show you what it's like.
Is it possible that he's still there because of the light? Since the light is so close to him, it's still pretty bright on the balcony. It's 1:30 am, and he's still there!
I don't know how big bats usually get, but this one looks pretty small. I'll see what i can do in the morning if he's still out there. I might have to wait until monday though if animal control is closed.

Can you turn off the light? Like is it a porch light or something?

brown bats aren't very big, he looks about normal, but his behavior is not. I agree that animal control or your local wildlife agency should be notified.

Is there a way i can see if he is still alive without touching it?

All we have here is the By-Law. We don't really have animal control, i live in such a small town, that everything goes through the by-law, even animal cruelty would go through them, or the police, the closest one would be in Ottawa, about an hour away, and they wouldn't come for a bat.
I just got off the phone with the by-law officer, and there is nothing they can do about it.
I'm just trying to figure out if there is something i can do to help him fly away without injuring him, i'm too scared to touch him. My mom suggested to try "nudging" him with a broom or something, but i'm too scared i will hurt him.
poor little thing, i don't want him to die. :(

While i was outside i mentioned to the landlord that we had a bat, next thin i know, he garbs a stick and pushes the bat off the wall! I was so mad!
The bat fell to the ground. :(
He is still alive because he was moving after he hit the ground. He fell onto his back, and a few minutes later managed to move to his belly. He is still breathing.
So now, i am thinking of putting on a big sweater and winter gloves to try to pick him up, and put him in the tree in the back yard, I'm still kinda scared, but i dont want the poor thing to die.
Worse case scenario, I'll be making a trip to the ER, for a rabies shot. Well i think that's the worse case scenario.
Wish me luck!

I do wish you luck, but I'm sure you'll be fine! Poor bat. Thanks for caring enough to help the poor little guy out.

All's well that end's well!
When i went back outside to help the little guy, he was gone!
Maybe ha was just waiting for me and my neighbour to leave cuz he was scared to fly away.
We looked around the balcony to make sure he wasn't still there, and he's not.
We asked the landlord if he had removed it, and he said no, ask Marie, maybe she claimed it as her pet! Hmmm, i guess he knows me too well! LOL
