Sores on pug's face

My pug has started getting sores on different parts of her face. She scratches them till they bleed. I am worried about infection. She also scratches her ears. The vet said she probably has food allergies and we changed to Nutro lamb food and gave us some ear meds. It worked but is only temporary. I dont like to pay $30 every time I see the vet to get a $9 tube of ear meds. There has to be something else. She doesnt have fleas. Is there a reason for this and would can I do?

I'm sure your vet checked for mites, if not maybe it could be that or like he said allergies, hmmm... but if it worked for a little while, i'm kinda stumped, how long did the food remedy work for? Are you still using it?

sounds like hot spots to me. Go to any store and get medication for her ( I had the same thing happen to my pug ).

If indeed this is an allergic reaction to food, then you may want to try Nutro for sensitive stomach. The grain is oatmeal and it contains no wheat or corn products which means it is easily digested. Although your pug may not have a sensitive stomach, this food may help him avoid ANY type of allergic reaction due to food ingredients that are hard to digest. Also, I have had great success using a refined tar shampoo. Just be CAREFUL not to get it in the eyes and to avoid getting any water in the ears. This can certainly cause ear infections. Just a suggestion. Remember, it can take up to 2 months on a new food before true results are noticed (can be sooner too) Good luck

I only know a very little about pugs, (I read into getting one) but I remember reading that Pugs can get pimples. How old is your dog?

If the dog eats or drinks from a plastic dish that could be the trouble. Many dogs have allergies to plastic dishes.

I'd switch to stainless steel.

I've personally seen conditions where the lips, chin, neck and cheeks become irritated from the plastic toxins, especially in flat faced breeds or mixes.

Pugs are very often affected by canine acne. Canine acne is usually seen on and around the chin and can be caused by allergies or sometimes a plastic water or food bowl will hold bacteria. Allergies in dogs is a complex problem and can be very serious. Try a different dog food ( for at least 2 months) and if it doesn't improve try another one. Also pugs can have seasonal allergies just like people, try to monitor when she has a problem year after year. Ear infections are a sign of allergies, also chewing toes.

Chewing on toes is sign of allergies?? My dog just recently started doing this (or I just noticed it) and I checked and checked to see if her paw was injured and it definetly isnt. I also just within the past week began to be bothered by my own seasonal allergies. Can dogs be perscribed medication for seasonal allergies or should they just grin and bear it like many of us do?

And Howard, how is the little pug doing?
