So I'm down to my huge pleco and one lemon tetra in my 39 gallon hex. Pretty much every part of the original filter system that came with the tank has now been discontinued so we've decided to completely revamp the tank. I'm think Angels, hubby is thinking sharks, either way, we need a completely new filtration system. Any suggestions?

Why don't you try doing it for yourself. There are many DIYs(Do it yourself) out there in google. just try How to make a solar powered fish tank? Will be interesting and good for earth as well.

a 36 gallon freshwater tank can use any filter. a strong HOB filter will work fine. Canister filter are also ok.
