This semester I am taking a course in Environmental science. Unfortunately we have to do some testing involving fish. Since I am completely against animal testing of all kind I am trying to find the information elsewhere. We have to figure out whether goldfish prefer a sheltered habitat or a more open area. I have tried to google, but I find the information quite vage. Anyone can/want to help me? I also have to present a way of testing this but since I am not really testing this at all :09: (well, I am NOT a cheater, I just don't want to do any testing involving live things...) So if anybody has an idea and can help me I would be very grateful!!! Thanks!

wow it has been way too long since i checked in here.
Goldfish tend to be open water swimmers, when you look at ponds and stuff goldfish dont tend to be structure fish like large mouth bass etc...
Most freshwater tropical fish dont make the ideal testing animals as they are so domesticated that they dont have any wild instincts at all. But i would support that goldfish are open water swimmers.
the best way to test is get a 20 long. it is 30 inches long so you can do 15 inches of open and 15 inches of planted side.
Goldfish will do best with anacris which is a cold water plant that you can buy at petsmart etc.. for like 3 dollars.
This is the way i would test.

Also if you really don't want to test you should bring up your moral/ethical concerns to your professor. Most of them will understand and perhaps they will help you find a classmate that is willing to let you observe their experiment.
