Here's a simple one that might not be so simple for everyone (like me... I can't answer it):

Who's your favorite animal character?

We're talkin' anything from the white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland to Lassie to Pluto. (Or feel free to special cartoon and live animal separately...)

? ? ? :-)

Hands down, Heathcliff is my favourite Fictional Animal Character with the Samurai Pizza Cats coming in a close second...
Both bring my love for 80s/90s cartoons and animals together into lovely enjoyable half hour segments!

For real animals... It would have to be the corgi named Nunzio from Dharma and Greg, he was fabulous i wanted to just hug him and snuggle him!

I love Rowf and Snitter from "the Plague Dogs" personally. And I quite liked the Todd too. Their story was just so sad.

I loved Broccoli the Skunk from "Bach and Broccoli". I remember thinking it was so cool that this little girl was in a movie with a real skunk. Another live action movie with an animal I loved was "Black Beauty" (1994 I think). If you haven't seen it yet get out and rent it! Buy a box of Kleenex too, it is so heart wrenching!

I loved "La Guerre des tuques" when I was young, but I haven't seen it in years. Its hard to find. It stars a bunch of kids and a St. Bernard. The kids have this big snowball fight and it becomes a war. They built forts and tried to destroy each others forts. One of the forts gets destroyed while the dog is sleeping underneath and it kills the dog. So darn sad, I'm tearing up here! Its also called "The Dog who Stopped the War". If you ever see it pick it up, well worth it.

And of course the Disney animals from my youth, can't forget them! Here's my favorite group of Disney doggies:

Dodger, Rita, Francis, Einstein and Tito!

What immediately comes to my mind is Bambi and also Pepe LaPue, the French Skunk in many cartoons when I was young.

Then there was this half hour cartoon that my son loved as a child and we had to make it home every afternoon by 4:30 so he could watch it. It had a large dog in it and dang if I can recall the name right now. I'll have to ask him and come back and add it later.

Was the cartoon "Clifford, The Big Red Dog"? My kids really like Clifford.

My favorite is the gecco from the Geico commercials. Also Buddy from the Airbud movies. And how can anyone not like the puppies from the toilet paper and flea prevention commericals (I can't remember the brands right now).

My favorite fictional animal characters are a tie between Thomasina in "Thomasina" and Jennie in "The Abandoned", both books by Paul Gallico. (both cats)

Oh wait, one more, Baby, the cave lion in "The Valley of Horses" (second book in the Clan of the Cave Bear, Earth's Children(tm) series) by Jean Auel.

I was going to add Thermal, from Deric Longden's books (originally featured in "The cat who came in from the Cold") but Thermal was actually a living cat, as Longden's books are autobiographical.

LOL - Both you and Bea thought of the same "Big Red Dog".

i like Murray the dog (i think that was his name) from Mad about you, with Helen Hunt. He always acted like a "dumb dog" when he actually was pretty smart.

Tailchasers Song is a book by Tad Williams, wonderful story; and the guy must live with cats to know them so well, and Redwall is a series of books by Jaques  somebody, I forget his last name. :o I love the Redwall Abbey books though.

They actually used 7 horses in the movie, and just painted them (with animal-safe paint, of course :) )

I saw Hidalgo in the theater and I own it, but I still bawl my freakin' eyes out at the end. Every time. I love when he sets him free...

I really enjoyed reading this thread. It brought back some memories.

Heathcliff, Clifford, Old Dan and Little Ann, and especially Rowf and Snitter.

Where the Red Fern Grows was my favorite book in grade school. I read it over and over again.

It's been well over 10 years since I've read The Plague Dogs, but I still remember some of Snitter's songs about seeking his vanished man.

I also like Ord, Cassie, and Zak and Wheezie from Dragon Tales.

I also like Sagwa from Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat. I just hope they didn't eat her. ;)

My favorites are Balto, Jenna, Aleu, Boris, and especially Muk and Luk from Balto.

As far as animated characters... I would have to say Itchy, the dachshund from All Dogs Go To Heaven. "Short legs! Short legs! Aw, my legs are short!" *Scampering after Charlie* And someone please give that poor puppy a flea collar!

Book-wise, I would have to say the team from The Book Of Night With Moon. Rhiow, Saash, Urruah, and Arhu... all so adorable! *Snuggles teh kitties*

And I LOVE how Urruah (as an alley-tom) is so obsessed with Opera, and Rhiow and Saash (as fixed queens) are both bemused by it. And don't quite understand what he finds so fascinating by it.
... And how Rhiow keeps trying to tell her humans that she doesn't like the tuna cat food, darn it!
... And Arhu's newfound obsession with pastrami and cheese.

The book is also a tearjerker, especially when Arhu (poor little kitten) opens up and tells the older cats about his past and what humans did to him. *Snuggles him*

The majority of the characters in The Fox and the Hound, especially Big, Mama, the fox, the hound, and the fox's girlfriend are all awesome characters (I forgot the names). I also like the guinea pigs from G-Force.

Hello to all

Mickey Mouse in Fantasia

An incredibly imaginative collection of short animated pieces, Fantasia gives us a familiar face, Mickey Mouse, as the “Sorcerer’s Apprentice.”

Reason: Mickey Mouse truly started it all. He made his debut in the cartoon “Steamboat Willie,” in 1928, and his popularity was the cementing foundation for Walt Disney’s growing empire. As one of Disney’s most beloved creations, Disney himself originally did the voice for Mickey Mouse. Today, Mickey Mouse is one of the most recognizable characters in the world and so, out of sheer longevity and staying power Mickey’s our numero uno.
Thanks

Hello

My favorite animal character overall would have to be Fawkes. A pheonix is just a remarkable animal, the epitome of loyalty (By the way, probably the reason why it's the perfect pet for Dumbledore). Moreover (as stated by Marauderess5), Fawkes in particular symbolizes the curious bond between LV and Harry. I hope to find out more about that in HP7!

Thanks
Have a nice time

If I remember correctly, Fawkes doesn't really appear in HP7, though maybe I'm just forgetting him?

I always thought he was a gimmick anyway...and Buckbeak was much cooler!;)

Timon, a meerkat in Disney's The Lion King! That character reminds me of many childhood memories. Remember?

In all honesty my favorite childhood animal characters were as follows:

Milo and Otis (which I still make my husband watch)

and Benji

followed by the original black and white Lassie

my youngest years were lacking for cartoons.

There are a lot in my mind when it comes to fictional animal characters. One that i enjoy watching the most is Donkey from Shrek. :) But of course my all time favorite is Garfield. ( being the cat lover that i am) ;)

I was never a Tom and Jerry fan personally. I found them to be a little dull.
