I have been the owner of 3 beautiful kitties. I rescued a stray, Honey Mustard 5 motnhs ago. She is such a fighter. She has had a lot of medical issues & they found a tumor in her mouth which has spread to her eye. I will have to put her down but I want to wait a little bit. I had lost my last kitty over a yr ago & I grieved for over a yr. The dr said there wasn't anything they could do for her. So, she is on painkillers & she is on supplements cause she has trouble eating.
I had an idea but I don't know about this. Adopting a new kitty & bringing her here before I put the other sweet one down. Has anyone ever heard of someone doing that?
I love Honey Mustard a lot.

Are you adopting the other kitty in a bid to help you with the grieving process?

Hello and welcome to petlovers. I am so sorry to hear about Honey Mustard.
I am one who must have multiple cats around me at all times. If I had only two, and knew I was going to be saying good bye to one soon, yes, I would bring in another. Have done so, in fact.
(I know you have only Honey Mustard currently, but having only one is not a realistic scenario for myself)
Please don't keep Honey Mustard alive for yourself, though. If she is suffering and has no quality of life, well...you know the Final Kindness is our last and possibly most important gift we can give our beloved pets.
Having said that, though I will also say that everyone has their own way of dealing with grief. Only you, (and she) can decide when she is ready.
Because I bring in another cat does not mean I loved the one who is gone any less. Each cat has his or her own space in my heart.
One more thing I would like to add is, sometimes bringing in another cat can cause stress to the resident cats. Honey Mustard is used to being an only cat, at least since she's been with you.
do you know her story before she came to you? Was she around other cats? You don't want to cause any added stress for her just now.
If you think another kitty might upset her, you could start visiting your shelter now, fill out your application, get all that out of the way..then visit weekly until a kitty chooses you. The shelter very likely would be willing to keep your new furbaby there, until Honey has gone to the Bridge.
When it's time to say good bye to your beloved Honey Mustard, remember, that because of you her last months were filled with comfort and love.

I think I would wait until Honey Mustard has passed on before bringing a new kitty into your home. Some cats can become very stressed with new additions, and I think it would be hard on her. Let her live out whatever she has left of her life comfortable and happy.

I agree with katiem. Even if Honey Mustard is good with other cats coming in (do you know if she is?), it can still cause stress and cause the cat to be a little upset, especially if she's sick. If I were you, I wouldn't want Honey Mustard to spend her last days stressed out or upset over a new addition. I'd want to spend as much time with her as possible, just relaxing and being comfortable.
As was already mentioned, you could always go visit cats in a shelter, pick one and fill out the adoption application, but not bring it home until after Honey Mustard is gone.
