Can someone explain to me the logic of using a crow-scarer?

Here's what happens:

BANG! - birds all fly up in the air, come straight back down and start eating the seeds again.
Twenty minutes later: BANG! - birds all fly up in the air, come straight back down and start eating the seeds again.
Twenty minutes later: BANG!! Birds all fly up in the air, someone gets trampled by a spooked horse, birds all fly back down and start eating the seeds again.

Whyyyyyyyy do people think they do any good???? What is the point of these evil things??

A what? I've heard of a scarecrow...like the character in Wizard of Oz, but a thing that bangs? Never heard of a crow scarer. I've seen farmers use bright metal plates and mylar string to keep birds out of fields before.
Lemme guess, you had a "battle" over the crow thingie right? Goodness Heather! I would think people had more sense then that! But wait their people.....we need a dog to figure out how to keep the crows out of the fields! ;)

Lol, yes, a crow-scarer is like... well... like a mini canon or something. Sits out in the field and makes a loud bang every twenty mins/half an hour, or whatever time the farmer sets it to.

I just find them sooooo infuriating, because they do not work! They just make a loud noise that scares the horses more than the bleedin' birds! Grr.

It was upsetting our little pony today... She's practically feral as it is, and she wouldn't let me catch her because the banging kept making her nervous. So in the end, after five attempts, I gave up and just opened the gate, hoping she'd make a dash for her stable. Did she? Nooooo!! She went tear-arsing off into the distance.

I stood there, stupidly, saying to myself, "She'll come back." Long pause. "Yeah, she'll come back."

Then I heard the thunder of tiny (but incredibly heavy) feet coming at unbelievable speed. Galloped straight by me. Lol. What a palaver.

For an old lady she sure can move!

But I hate crow-scarers!

Poor little girl! Im glad she came back though. I would have been freaking out! Ok two q's:
One: Any pics of the pony-as you know Im quite partial to the small and tiny horsie peoples! Hehehehe
Two: What the heck is a "palaver"?

I will try to snap a piccy of her, she is a cutie-pie. She's only something like 12-13 hands. She's a hackney pony, and her leg action is wow-some!

"What a palaver"... means... erm... "What a to-do." Or "What a kerfuffle!" Or in this instance it means what a random chaotic bunch of nonsense happenings. Something like that anyway. :D Bet that cleared that right up for ya, huh? :p

Hmm. Maybe the point is to let the crows get a good laugh at the humans who are trying to scare them?

Haha, I started reading this and i was sooo confused. I thought it said Cow scarer. I was like, so it scares the cows so the birds can't land on them? huh. haha. REST AT EASE EVERYONE, i figured it out, slowly but surely. :P

The noisy bleep is back, has been for a good few weeks.
Bang.
Bang.
Bang.
Bang.
Are the birds in the least bit bothered? No. Is the seed under a foot of snow anyway? Yes.

What's the point?? :banghead:

This year we've also got makeshift scarecrows. Big plastic bags on fence posts. I can't wait till there's a wind and they start blowing all over the place. The horses will LOVE that.

Aw. It's a shame Heather's not here anymore, coz I've finally got that picture for her. Here it is anyway. Bit too late now, but hey-ho.

Here's the little darlin, along with Aub of course. (Aub's the one with his mouth full, as per usual.)

Yip. :) Dinky isn't she? She's in her twenties.

That's poor old Sundance behind her. We lost him last week. Poor lad.

Aw that's the one you lost. I'm sorry...... :(

Yeah, she is a dinky one. I might not be afraid of her, so that's 2 horses I could probably pet now lol, Pip

Lol, yeah but you wouldn't wanna stand in between them. Right after that picture, Spook nearly whacked him on top of the head with a front hoof! :p Poor Aub, he was only saying hello!

Yeah, poor Sundance. He was five years older than me. And poor old Spook doesn't have a friend now. Heartbreaking.
