View Full Version : I lost Moose today...
I'm so sad, I miss him so much already. Moose was one of my boy rats, my first born. He had such a lovely nature, he loved having his ears scratched.
Today we had to put him down, I've never had to make a decision like this before, it was harder than I thought. He had a tumour.
Now his mate is all alone and I don't know what to do. We can't get any more rats, but now he has to spend the rest of his life alone, which is not very nice for a rat. It's the same as a human who is in solitary confinement. They get depressed and mourn for their mates too. He will just have to get extra attention from us, but no amount of human attention can make up for their loneliness.

I'm sorry for your loss, Pebo. It's never easy losing a beloved friend, however big or small they are.
His mate might be okay, animals can be more resilient than people sometimes. I thought that my little old budgie would pine away for her friend of 12 years, but we lost him over a year ago and she's doing better than ever now. Hopefully, Moose's mate will be the same and not be too grief-stricken. Just lavish love upon her, that's all you can do.
RIP, Moose. x

I'm so sorry for your loss.
RIP Moose.
Thanks guys. I'm still very sad about Moose, I miss him terribly. Alvin, his mate seems to be doing fine, he isn't totally alone because the girls' cage is right next to him and we give him double the amount of attention now. At least he looks okay, I hope.
But I am even more sad now. We lost another rat tonight. One of the girls, May. She also had a tumour, but in her "lady parts". She was bleeding so we rushed her to the 24hr vet. We had to put her down too. If her tumour had gotten any bigger, it would have been extremely painful, not to mention that she could have died of blood loss. She was pale and lethargic already from the amount of blood she lost. It was such a hard decision. I can't handle this, 2 rats within 3 days.

gosh, pebo, I'm so sorry for this second loss. Two pets at once is really devastating.
It's the price of letting them into our lives and hearts, they bring such joy, but oh it hurts when they leave us.

That's so sad. When it rains it pours. :(
My other two girls don't seem very effected, in fact they seem happier but it's probably my imagination because I'm worried so much about them.
Alvin, the other boy who is alone seems okay too. He must be lonely because he is happier than ever to see me. At least he can still "sniff" the girls' as their cage is right next to his. Shame I wish I could carry him around with me all day long, I feel so sorry for him still. The up side is they all get extra lovies and yummy treats every day, Alvin especially gets a lot of chewy things to keep him occupied. Ai, I wish I could get him a friend to help with the lonliness, but that will just make things worse, the circle will never end....
I'm watching them now as they are pulling their toilet paper all over their cage, lol, it's so funny actually. They are such amazing creatures, I just love them to bits. Wish they lived longer.
Thank you to everyone for their condolences. It really means a lot. Not everyone understands what's so hard about losing a rat.

It's devastating!! I absolutely feel for you, I truly do.
When I lost my rats I was inconsolable. I had to skip work both times because I was just a wreck. The only two times I ever didn't go into work when I was at that job.
I'm glad your others are doing well though. X

It is hard...very hard to make a decision like that, we have had to do it twice in the last 20 years and it does not get easier. God bless and RIP little furry
