Hi everyone:

My parents have been living in the same apt. for at least 15 years. About 5 years ago they adopted a chihuahua. Their landlords office is right around the corner. The knew about the dog and didn’t mind. Now, my brother got a puppy Oct. of 2003. He’s mix lab/pit. He’s a great dog, very smart. A few weeks ago the landlord saw us walking him. And my parents received a letter from them that they have to get rid of the “big black dog”. My mother responded by saying that he’s my dog and that I only bring him there during the day while I go to work. They wrote back and said that they don’t want to repeat it again, we have to get rid of the big black dog and for me to find another place to put him. My mother said she doesn’t care what the landlord says and were not getting rid of the dog but were discreet when we walk him.

Since this happened I have been so worried. I’m afraid that the landlord would knock at their door along with animal cops or ASPCA and forcefully take the dog from us. Can they even do this? At the same time, I don’t my parents to get evicted. I just don’t know what to do. Has anyone been in this situation? What are the laws on this? We were upset with my brother when he got the dog because he wasn’t thinking about the future but we all got so attached to this dog that we don’t even think about that. I’m hoping to move into a bigger house before the end of the year and I’m praying that nothing happens to him before I move. I guess I’m just letting my feelings out and hopefully get some advice because this is bothering me so much that I literally cannot sleep. He’s a great dog, he makes my father happy and it actually brought our family closer.

Does their lease agreement allow pets?
