I brang a cockatiel home that I bought at a pet store on Friday. He wasn't hand raised but he is really friendlt towards my mom and I who have been handling him everyday since Friday and he is out of his cage for most of the day. He is a very quiet bird, the only time I've heard him squak is before he was tame when I put my hand on him to take him out of the cage. My mom and I talk to him constanly, we even whistle to him. We hold him infront of a window to hear the birds chirp, so maybe he would but it isn't working. I really want him to chirp! Is something wrong with him? Is it because he is young??? Help!

Your cockatiel needs time to adjust and get really comfortable in your house. Remember that this is all new to him. Even though he is allowing you and your mom to handle him and is now "tame", it will take some time before he is really comfortable. Just give him time ... he'll eventually settle in and will surprise you with his chirps and whistles ... :)

Yes, I definitely agree with Amanda.

My tiel, Snickers, was our first bird and we had the same worries. She was very timid, quiet, and wanted to stay in her cage. This lasted about a 2 weeks.

She soon became very friendly, sociable, and started tweeting and whistling. We have her 2 years and she still doesn't talk. I found out that the female cockatiels very rarely talk. That's ok with us because she communicates other ways.

Toys and different perches in the cage help.

Do you know if your tiel is a male or female?

Don't give up talking to your tiel. Try to socialize her and she will soon become friendly.

Good luck.

And I agree with what Amanda and Mrs. Birdy said! Just give your tiel time to settle in. When we first got one of our budgies, he was very quiet and calm, but after a few weeks he got comfortable with the new environment and started chirping and flying around all the time! Also, are you still going to get the ring-neck too?
