View Full Version : pigs feet?
my grandparents called me last night and told me they have some cooked pig's feet (i have noo idea what they were used for!) that they have saved for Kye to chew on. i told them it should be fine as long as there's nothing that'll splinter, and good ol' gramps told me that there wasn't. i haven't gone and gotten them yet, what do you guys think? go or no go?

If I remember correctly, its the internal meaty part of the pigs foot, not the hoof, unless thats the part they save for dogs...
You can buy pigs feet in the grocery store. People eat them, so I would imagine a dog would be fine. They even sell them in jars pickled.
Its kinda funny, I just had this conversation with my son when he asked "Mom, whats that !?!".

Pigs are very fatty, especially pig ears...be careful, too much fat can send her into Pancreatitis. How were they cooked? Do you know?

Our rule of thumb... say no to pig products in general. They're way too fatty. Besides, you don't know what they were from, where the animal was from or what kind of conditions it was raised in, and you don't know what they might have been cooked in. If you want your dog to chew a piece of animal; stick to RAW bison or beef marrow bones, or bison or beef bully sticks. Hell, even elk and deer antlers are fine.

i saw one also at grocery store, it looks really weird... LOL :D
well i went and got them and it's actually cooked pig's hocks. they used them to make that ham hock jelly gross looking stuff..lol. anyways, they're just bones, and i don't know if i should give her just bones...gramps said she'd just chew them up and eat them and i'm not sure that's so good!

My grandma give our dog pig feet but only occasionally for pig meat and bones are really meaty. We have a slaughter house nearby which usually give our meaty bones mom cooking.

NO COOKED BONES!!!! Absolutely no COOKED bones. They CAN and WILL splinter and that's BAD. If they were raw, then it wouldn't be so so bad, but NO COOKED BONES! i can't stress it enough.
I agree about the no cooked bones! They are dangerous. Even if they are smoked.
My question is, in the wild they would eat raw meat and bones and whatever animal they could get hold of right? So is it really bad for them? i know pork is fattening though. But I used to give my dogs raw bones but they would eat the whole thing and then later in the night vomit it up. So I stopped doing that.

Raw bones are COMPLETELY different than cooked bones, Pebo. Wild dogs eat RAW bones, thus...less likely to have a problem.

Raw bones and the raw food diet in general are good when done properly. Raw bones come in many different sizes and shapes, and those must be matched properly to the right dogs. Big dogs can eat rib bones no problem, they will vomit them up if they did not break them up enough. If you want to give your dogs a bone to work on recreationally, marrow bones are the best. they are strong and hard to break plus you can usually get them with meat on them too.
I never feed pork or pig products at all... It's hard to find an organic pig farm, plus pigs are toxic animals and are fatty; i even discourage people from eating pork, it's not very good for much anyone at all.
perfect. i decided not to give them to her anyways.
thank you!
