What Vaccinations do dogs really need??
I know that Rabies are important but others are they really necessary??
I read somewhere that they dont even get their dog rabies shot bc their dog is house dog and said Vaccinations actually cause cancer on some dogs??
Are these Vaccinations really necessary??
distemper or parvovirus, Bordatella ,Parinfluenza ,Leptospirosis,Coronavirus, Adenovirus.
Im asking because lily had bad reaction last time she got vaccinated.
Thanks :)

this is a tough one.... if your dog had a bad reaction, you should always talk to your vet. My dog actually had a very bad reaction this time. about three weeks later I found a growth on her leg. The tumor was removed an non-cancerous but my worst fear was the vaccinations being the cause.
if you are not boarding your dog, going to the dog parks, etc. I think the only requirement is rabies.
did you talk to your vet about your dogs reaction and what was the cause exactly?

Some vets say that dogs need 'ALL' vaccines, and some say 'not many'...and some say 'none'. It depends on your vet and what he/she decides.

Some vaccines can cause Cancer. Some do not. Some dogs are more at risk than others, but the people who do not vaccinate because their dog is mostly indoor...that's a silly excuse. Never say never. Many of the vaccines that are out there are for airborne illnesses.
Are these Vaccinations really necessary??
Distemper - Very serious, generally fatal, respiratory/neurological virus.
Parvovirus - No cure. Generally fatal. More common in puppies, but can happen to ANYONE.
Bordatella - Airborne (Kennel Cough) - Comes from other dogs, around your house, at your vet's office, at the park, grooming salon, etc.
Leptospirosis - Can come from Raccoon's or Oppossum's...it damages the liver and kidneys and is usually found in standing water.
It depends on your area and what you think your doggie is susceptible to as to what vaccines are necessary for them.
Im asking because lily had bad reaction last time she got vaccinated.
If she was given the Lepto vaccine, it is the most famous for causing reactions. If you vaccinate her again, your vet should not and probably won't give her Lepto. Or, depending on the area...he/she may give Benadryl injections prior to vaccinated and split the vaccines up to different days.

You're welcome. Glad I could help. :)
There are also many other vaccines you haven't listed, like the Dental Vaccine, Rattlesnake Vaccine, New Castle Something Vaccine, and many others...there are soooooo many out there, and it can be quite overwhelming.

Yes they actually called me next day to check up on her. They said if I wanted I could bring her back to get checked and it was normal to get some side effects.
I think the problem was they gave her 2 shots at the same time. Like rabie and something else. I was so mad at my Bf for that. He took my dog and his dog to see the vet that day. I will never let him go by himself now on.

Lets say if I can't afford all the vaccines that are out there for my dog,
which ones are more important or do you recommend? Thanks :)

I would think that would depend on the age of the dog, if it's a puppy then I think Parvo and distemper are the most important, if it's an older dog, then rabies is, and bordetella is important if they are around other dogs frequently. I gotta admit, lately the only vaccination that I've done is Rabies, because of the money angle.

Its so confusing! I thought vaccinations are supposed to help your body defend itself from bad things. But some people say it can cause cancer. Its like 50/50.
I think I will stick with just Rabies and Bordetella for now.

I only do rabies because it's required by law. You have to weigh the pros and cons. If there is a serious or fatal illness prevalent in your area you might want to take your chances with the reactions of the vaccine. I've heard some horror stories about reactions to vaccines, but then again some of those diseases are pretty scary too. I don't think there is a "better safe than sorry" here. You just have to research and weigh the risks and benefits of each.
I'm not a fan of Bordetella. It's not a serious illness. All the dogs I adopted had kennel cough when I adopted them. It passed reasonably fast and it wasn't a big deal. They haven't been vaccinated against it since I adopted them 2 years ago and they go to parks, pet stores, friend's and family's houses with dogs, and have never caught it again. JMO

My answer to this is basically what Shockadine has said below:

Not EVERY vaccine is good for EVERY dog. Not every vaccine is needed for every dog...you may need to sit down with your own vet, and discuss the pro's, con's, and fears that you have with him/her. They'll be able to tell you what is prevalent in your area and what they feel is best for your dog.
