Congrats on your new luvie! I found out last week that my lovebird (Bijou) is a female when she laid 2 eggs. She's only 11 months old (hatchday: July 13, 2002) and we always thought "she" was a "he" until last week. :)
Anyway, lovebirds are great birds ... very active, comical, and sweet (when not in "breeding" mode...;) )

I don't know what I'd do if I looked in Barkleys cage and found a egg!

I was wondering if lovebirds can be as interactive as the pionus or conures. Amanda, whenever you talk about your birds it seems that you interact with the pionus more then the lovebird. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with that, I just wondered if you find the lovebird more of a bird to watch then interact with?

DSimko, lovebirds are exactly as casegura described. Bijou is a little clown ... and I'm sure she does all the things she does because she knows she'll get a laugh out of us. You are right that I haven't been interacting with Bijou as much the past few weeks ... that's because she was in "breeding mode" and refused to come out of her cage. She became so territorial about her cage that I had a hard time cleaning it. When I forced her to come out (using a dowel for her to step up on), she was in such a bad mood the whole time and she let us know it too. She would purposely dive down to us and peck us on the top of our head. Or, she would come up and want to snuggle with us and as soon as we fell for it, she would bite. And she bit so hard and always drew blood. Before she went into the "breeding mode", everyone could handle her (even the kids). But as soon as she became hormonal, the kids became terrified of her and would leave the room whenever I let her out. Anyway, she is now out of her "bad mood" and back to her sweet self (Thank God because my fingers were getting raw!).
In summary, I would say that Bijou had a really bad case of PMS

casegura - how long did you have your lovebird? What is the usual life span of a lovebird?
Amanda, Bijou sounds like a love most of the time and as you say just a bad case of PMS. Still amazes how like us they are.
Thanks to both of you for the info.

DSimko, I never knew birds could get SO hormonal until Bijou. I had 2 female cockatiels before and even though they kept laying eggs (they were constantly in "breedind mode") neither got so hormonal as Bijou. I guess that's just how lovies are ... :)

Casegura - I was thinking about it. Not sure.

DSimko, I agree with Casegura. If you do get a lovebird, you will not regret it. They are so funny ... and they think of everything. Bijou really keeps me on my toes when she's out of her cage. As Casegura said, you will have to watch the lovebird with other birds. Two days ago, I had both Bijou and Rio out of their cages and Bijou decided to join Rio on her playstand. I watched the two carefully to see how they will interact. That was the first day they were out of their cages together. Anyway, Bijou sat right next to Rio without bothering her and I was so happy to see they were getting along. Then all of a sudden, I heard Rio scream really loud (the loudest one I've heard come out of her so far) and saw they were fighting. Anyway, I took Rio away from the playstand and saw that Bijou had bitten Rio on her wing. Bijou bit so hard that it was bleeding. Now, they do not get their "out of cage" time together anymore.
Casegura, are all lovebirds like that toward other birds? I'm just wondering if that is the norm for lovebirds because I once saw a lovebird and a budgie (they were being boarded at the pet store) in a cage together and they were cuddling together. They were so sweet.

Casegura, do you think Bijou will stop bitting Rio ... eventually? Or should I just keep their "out of cage time" separate? Bijou has been around other birds before (my cockatiels) but they had their flight feather so they could get away from Bijou if she ever tried to bother them. Yes, Bijou is older than Rio by a few months (you got their ages right). This is totally new to me because I've had budgies and cockatiels before and they never fought. I'm not sure if Bijou ever tried to "boss" my cockatiels (when I had them) because I never saw any fighting going on.

Thanks for the reply, Casegura. I'm going to try and let them out together again, but will watch very closely. It's weird that Bijou doesn't seem to mind Rio at all (seems like she doesn't even know Rio exists) when they are both inside their cages. Their cages are next to each other (Rio's cage is big so it stands on its own and Bijou's cage is on top of a table).

Casegura: Did you see Bijou's pictures when she first came home? It is the first 2 pictures in her album. She looks so different now. Hard to believe it's the same bird, huh?
