...we were cleaning out an old storage shed in the yard, and...well, we apparently smashed this little guy something fierce.

His tail is missing and bleeding, and he has a scrape across his head...he seems to have some sort of brain injury, or just that his equilibrium is off...can that happen from stress or trauma? Do you think it may correct itself?

I'd say he's pretty young...some of these guys hanging around are house are much bigger and thicker...at dusk...there are about 10 or 15 on the side of the house.

I plan on releasing him once I know he's back to normal, but I'm afraid something may take advantage of him if I let him loose in the garden as is. I did put him in the garden, but then felt like I'd just fed him to something, so I took him back and put him in a quiet place.

What kind of gecko is he? He does cry out frequently, and of course...this upsets Mother Hen Chica...

I just went out to check on him, and he's gone! :D He must have recovered well and escaped the bucket! So, that's awesome!

He looks like a spotted leopard gecko. They have tons of variations. He risks getting a fungal infection on his head, but with some luck that should be fine, and the tail should grow back fully within a month so I think he'll be okay on his own. :]

He's more than likely not a leopard gecko - they are not native to Texas. I'd say he's some sort of house gecko - there are thousands of species. I'll have Kyle look at him tonight when he gets home from work. He's better at house gecko ID than I am.

That's too bad that he got so mangled. I'm sure he'll go find a new place to hide and recover. His tail will most likely regenerate at some point.

His crying out also means he's stressed. Ours will only really make sounds during mating or when they feel threatened/stressed.
Stress and trauma will mess up their equilibrium. The last time we moved, one of our geckos got bumped a lot and he was never the same. We had him euthanized because we couldn't figure out if he was suffering or not.
