I am up early and decided I hadn't posted any new geckos in a long time. We've been getting quite a few recently, and also having some hatch.
First up is an unsexed chahoua (Rhacodactylus chahoua). We've been calling her/him "The Sneetch" until we know the gender and can give him/her a proper name.

This is an adult female we just got over the weekend. I'm still working on a name for her.

More to come!

These 2 are a male/female pair of Uroplatus sikorae. They are from Madagascar.
First the female (still working on name)

And the male. These guys are almost impossible to find in their vivariums. The camaflauge is awesome.

Still more!

Next up are 2 unsexed gargoyle geckos (Rhacodactylus auriculatus).
Teregus (We are really hoping at least one of these 2 is male. Males are harder to find than females and we already have an adult female.) I have named him, but will change it if this one is female.

And no name. These 2 are full clutchmates and hatched on the same day.

I'm not done :)

Lets see....how about the new crested geckos (Rhacodactylus ciliatus).
This is Torch. She was produced by a good friend of ours, and sold to someone else. He was moving to college, so we got her from him.

This is Snow Queen. She was produced by another good friend of ours. She's the most beautiful crested in our collection.

This is a male we just got over the weekend. He comes from the same guy who produced Snow Queen. They aren't related, and we're hoping to breed them in the spring. (he needs to grow a bit yet)

Odd looking creatures. I never knew there were so many different types of Geckos. How do you sex one of them?

Dang IE crashed...I'm still posting pics....anyway at the base of their tail they will have these things called "preanal pores". Males will have them and they usually show at a younger age. I didn't post a good picture, but when the males are adults, you can see a "bulge" similar to what you'd see on a cat or dog. We don't reliable sex our geckos until they reach about 10-12 grams. :) Don't worry, I still can't see these preanal pores....Kyle just tells me what they are and I believe him.
Oh, and there are THOUSANDS of species of geckos. Right now we have 7 different species, but I am dang sure we'll have more in the future. They are so much fun.
More pictures coming!

Now on to the babies. These all hatched this summer. The first 3 are from good friends of ours in Iowa. (Ssarah posts once in a while - she's a vet tech.)
Too small for names.

And these are ones that we hatched this year. So far we've gotten 6 hatchlings with a couple more eggs "cooking".
This is the first one we hatched back in July. He/She's a keeper.

And this is #6. Also a keeper.

At this point, we are planning to sell the other 4 geckos we hatched once they are old enough to go to new homes. :)
There, I'm done, phew!

Wow! Krystal that is some collection of Geckos! I never knew there were so many varieties either. How hard are they to keep? What do they eat?

Minus the ones from Madagascar, they are really easy to care for. We keep our adults in 10 gallon fish tanks. We give them sticks to crawl on and plants to hide in. As long as the humidity in the room is 50-70%, we're good. They are nocturnal, so kind of boring to look at during the day.
Minus the ones from Madagascar, they eat their own food called Crested Gecko Diet. The cresteds, chahouas, gargoyles, and another species we have all eat it. It was made by a man who was one of the first to collect wild caught animals in 1994. It's perfectly balanced for all their nutritional needs. It comes in a powdered form, all you do is add water and it turns into a pudding mixture. We have little bowls and the geckos lick it up. In the wild, they would be eating bugs and nectar from flowers.
The ones from Madagascar are strictly carnivores. We actually raise a species of roach that doesn't climb or fly, and they give live birth. They also don't smell NEARLY as bad as crickets. The babies look like little pill bugs - the ones you'd see if you flipped a log in the woods. So, those guys get a couple of roaches every day. They are a sensitive species, so we have to be careful to keep them at the right temp/moisture. So far we're doing good - we've only had them for about a month.

Gee that is very interesting Krystal - I never thought about someone making a Gecko food. Kind of like how pellets were made for birds. Thanks for teaching me a bit about Geckos.

I love the orangish colour of the new hatchlings! They are so beautiful. The temptation to get back into herps is getting strong...

Okay. I'm learning, but I'm still one of those who will avoid the reptile/amphibian sections of stores. :)

Years ago, I used to love to play dress-up especially at my grandmother's house. She had the most wonderful collection of shoes. I'd try on as many as I could, and find all of the matching handbags. Well, she had a beautiful brown pair of shoes with a matching bag that I loved to play in. Then she told me what they were made of ... SNAKE! That was the end of those as far as I was concerned. I didn't even touch those shoes or that bag for years. I suppose if she'd gone on to tell me about her soft white shoes and bag, made from ostrich, that I'd have gone off dressing up altogether.:D
