yes, you read that right......i have an 18 yr. old mixed baby, sam is her name. she has arthritis, can't see that well, and i think can't hear any longer. however, up until 2 days ago nothing was going on that would cause me to be concerned. 2 days ago she had severe diarrhea. yesterday she had a normal bowel movement, and again today, she has the diarrhea again. last night i did give her, along with her regular food, the juice from a beef roast i made (was quite greasy). as that may account for her diarrhea thru the night and this morning, i don't know if this is the "beginning of the end" for her or just a bowel problem that might go away. i called our vet and he said to give her pepto bismal - 1 tbsp 2-3 x's/day. hopefully that will help. i had given her immodium but she had another bout of diarrhea after i gave it to her.

any suggestions as to what to feed her. she is her normal self - always following the rest of our "crew" for treats and really acting herself other than the bowel problem. would rice and scrambled eggs hurt her or just give her her regular food minus the greasy gravy.

i know her days MUST BE numbered at her age, but still you hate to see the end coming. hopefully this isn't the beginning of the end.

hiya lucy...I am so sorry your little one is not feeling well. When my puppers get diahrrea I give them a tablespoon iof pure pumpkin you can get in the cans...not the pumpkin pie stuff, I have vbeen doing this for years, Here is a little info on pumpkin and puppers with diahrrea or are constipated

I am not sure about the Immodium. I know in many people it can cause some pretty bad problems.

Your baby is an old gem, obviously, and I am sure the greasy gravy problem sent her little tummy in an uproar. Anything greasy like gravy or juice from a protein for my dogs send them into a diarrhea tailspin especially the 12 year old. My hubby poured some of the greasy residue from a roast on the puppers food once. He claims it was in the frdge and he thought it was just the "gravy" and poured ut liberally on their food. They had severe diahrrea for a couple of days

Good luck with your baby

Tip 75 - Pumpkin for cats - pumpkin for dogs - Pumpkin for diarrhea or constipation

If your dog or cat is having the occasional case of constipation or diarrhea, one of the things that might help is canned pumpkin. Yes canned pumpkin in its pureed form (NOT pumpkin pie filling) is a fantastic stool softener which makes it a good natural remedy for constipation. It often helps with upset stomach or indigestion for both cats and dogs. It is very rich in fibre and adding just one or two teaspoonfuls to your pet's food often gets the system moving in no time. Dogs will occasionally want to eat it directly and that's fine too. Sometimes though, finicky cats and dogs won't touch it no matter what you do.

On the opposite end of things is diarrhea. Since the dietary fibre in canned pumpkin absorbs water, it can be a great help to a cat or dog that has diarrhea. Some pet owners report that it firms up their pet's loose stools or diarrhea within a few hours. Again one to two teaspoonfuls is all that is needed.

N.B. It should be noted that both diarrhea and constipation can both be very serious and require immediate veterinary care depending on the cause. Whatever the cause, diarrhea or constipation lasting more than 24-36 hours requires vet care.

I have been told by vets that boiled chicken, rice and cottage cheese are easy on the tummy for dogs and may help.

I hope your baby is feeling better soon!

I've always relied on the boiled chicken and rice routine...usually works. Oh, I often withheld food for 12 to 24 hours before beginning the chik n rice route...just to settle things down (no limit on water though)

Good luck.

mix some rice (not minute rice) with some drained canned chicken (for protien) pieces and feed him/her that for 3-7 days... if that doesn't work contact your vet.
