hey guys
I was just wondering about native plants and my rainbow lorikeet. What kids of flowers from the natives are best to use and can you just place it in the cage for him and all would be good.....

Flowering native shrubs, like banksias, grevilleas and bottlebrushes, Callistemon, Eucalyptus and Grevillea trees are a part of their natural diet.
I'm not really sure how practical it is to try and feed a 'native diet' unless you live where these plants and trees are naturally found. Do you live in Australia?
Also, do not feed a Lorikeet seeds. It can damage their beak and tongue, which is brush tipped for nectar gathering.
Unless I lived where these plants/trees were found, and I knew someone well versed in feeding Lorikeets, I'd probably go with a pre-made food. From what I've read these parrots develop serious problems if fed an improper diet.
Here is a larger list I found of suggested plants.
Swamp Mahogony
Tallowood
Pink Bloodwood
Callistemon
Spotted Gum
Stream Lily
Melaleuca
Lomandra
Bangalow Palm
Sandpaper fig
Bleading heart
Pigeon pea
Wattle
Pademelon grass
Native violets Banksia
Grevillia (in moderation)
Brown Kurrajong
Native Tamarind
Blue Quondong
Red Cedar
Riberry
Moreton Bay fig
Blue-berry Ash
Firewheel tree
Cunjevoi
Native Ginger
Lilly Pilly
Lemon scented tea-tree
Flooded-Gum

thanks for the reply
Yeah i do live in australia so it is easy for me to get these plants, but i was just wondering if i can just place it in the cage and all will be fine and nothing bad will happen. I also know that i cant feed him seeds and he gets pre made food and fresh fruit and veg, so all im really wanting to know is if it would be ok to indroduce these natives into his diet...:)
