I don't know what to do with my 6yr. old Bichon Frise. He has a blinding cataract in one eye and a small one in the other eye which he sees good out of. Surgery is recommended on both eyes since he'll be under anestheia. I don't if I should do both, one or none. Does anyone have advice?

Cataracts are fairly painful. I think that you should do them both...it'll save money in the long run, and be better for him as well. Why do they want you to do both? Does he have the possibility in the other good eye?

I don't know if cataracts in dogs are similar to the way they are in humans, but last Feb. my husband had one removed from one eye, which he was totaly blind in. At that time he had good vision in the other, but his eye surgeon warned us to expect one to grow in the good eye. . Now he has lost almost all vision in the good eye, and will be needing the cataract removed from it soon.

The surgery was done with just a local anesthetic, and he felt no pain at all. All they told him to use for post surgery pain was Tylenol, and that was all he needed. The cataracts apparantly hurt more tan the surgery to remove them does.

If they do act the same in dogs as humans it would make sense to get them both done at once rather than make the dog go through it all twice.
