Hi everyone,
I'm new to this website and I had a few questions that I was hoping someone could try to answer for me. Well, here's my story. My boyfriend bought me a pair of lovebirds for our 2 year anniversary. He did this because I always talked about how I wanted them and I'd owned several birds throughout my life and still had a Red Lored Amazon. Well, Long story short, my one lovebird (Eva) was very abusive and violent but also very loving and protective (She seemed really Bi-polar) towards the other one (Liam) and pecked him in the eye (We're assuming, at least, that this is what happened, because they were always wrestling). His eye then got infected, and at this point I'd only owned them for two months. I took him to the Vet as soon as I realized he was injured. She said that Liam had an infection in his eye and had spread to his brain. He was really underweight and not well at all. She said that there wasn't much that she could do to help him and that it was basically his time to go.
When I brought Eva back home, she was happier then ever, jumping around in her cage and playing her a water dish. It's been a year and a half that I've had her. And now at this point we're realizing that she isn't a her and is actually a him, so his name now is Manny. I'm a college student and I try to spend as much time as possible talking and being friendly towards him, but he's always too scared. I'll leave the cage door open and just sit across the room sometimes and he won't move at all for 15 minutes. It's upsetting because I want to be able to take him out and let him have the freedom that he deserves but he never wants to leave his cage. He isn't too scared of me, he'll let me put my hands in the cage and he'll eat out of my hands and even climb onto them, but he wont come out. I was also away from him a few months ago for about two weeks. And the entire time, my mom said he was very quiet and just ate and sat on his perch the whole time, but when I came back and he saw me he was jumping around and chirping.
Maybe this is normal behavior, but I'm just not sure, it's kinda strange for me because I've never had a pet that was like this.
Does anyone have any tips for me getting him to come out?
And do I still have time to teach him, or is he going to be stubborn and not willing to learn?
Any feedback is greatly appreciated! Thank you - Jen :o
