did you know that just last year petco signed a new contract to produce 180,000 parrots a year so they can make money. do you know how many sanctuarys there are out there that are pissed about this and there isn't any laws regulating them, my advice as is many, many sanctuarys and parrot adoption centers is DON'T SHOP AT PETCO FOR ANYTHING! buy all your parrot needs, toys, food through places that don't sell birds. i.e. magazines, or the internet. it just makes me sick that there aren't any laws to help the animals that people buy in that the people have to go thru an education 1st before purchasing any animal to ensure the animals life.

That makes me sooo mad too! The other day I went there (just to look since I was at a store right by it, not to buy anything!) and some big guy who obviously knew nothing about birds was looking at a poor little Hahn's mini macaw, so a worker came up to see if he wanted to buy it. The whole time I was just standing right by them (they totally ignored me!!) listening to their ridiculous question/answer series and seeign how they were handling the birds. (really, I was just there to make sure they weren't doing anything completely horrible to the bird, and was sticking around ready to give any advice I could!) The main questions were 1) Q. Will it talk? A. Yes, hahn's are terrific talkers and he'll be talking up a storm one day! and 2) Will he get more color on his wings? A. Yes, most get lots more red on their shoulders once they get older. The entire thing was absolutely ridiculous, especially once the worker got out the poor scarlet macaw in the very back corner of the store to show to the guy (wanting to make $2000 instead of $800???), and not being able to get it off her shoulder! I was about to say, "Get down lower, and the poor, poor bird will get right on rather than you standing up all the way and scaring it to death with your hands!" but they finally got it. Then the guy was trying to hold it, and each time it'd try to get a grip he'd think it was about to bite and quickly bring his hand away! Next time, I'm definitely going to speak up alot more and start talking about all the down-siders of owning parrots (as well as a few upsiders since I just can't help it!) and try to convince the people that "parrots are not for them" before anyone can stop me! I truly think that people should have to be given permission by people like Sally Blanchard, Liz Wilson, certain rescue owners, and other people like that before they're allowed to own a parrot! The same thing about breeders- there's so many bad ones out there but no one can stop them.... :(

but with all the horror stories I've been hearing I would never buy a bird or any animal or supply from them. I am very adament about not purchasing anything from Petland they abuse their birds so badly. I got my budgie, Pumpkin from Petland. They reached in and grabbed her by her tail. The poor bird was probably not even six weeks old.(her beak was still black) However she was my fist bird so I knew nothing about them. I just had one book on budgies and birdtalk coming in the mail starting the next month. So we bought her. The poor bird was terrified of hands and I have had her for 2 1/2 years and she has finally learned to step up. Thank goodness my pionus Sophie was able to teach her that humans aren't all bad. But I will never buy a bird or anything else from Petland again.

Adopting a second home bird from a sanctuary or bird club not only helps homeless birds but is such a gratifying, heart warming experience. That's how I adopted my maxi pionus and he's great. I definitely recommend that if you're in the market for a new bird, check out your local rescue stations or bird clubs if you have any.....you'll be happy you did.
