For those of you who may not know I am owned by a 7 year old male Timneh grey, Taco.

My husband and I have talked about it and decided that next year would be a good time to add another grey to the family. This time I would love a female Congo.

Now, I know that the two subspecies can mate and reproduce. I know I wouldn't have to worry about anything for 5-7 years. I guess I just really would like some reassurance that with out a nest box and encouragement to breed nothing would happen.

I don't like the idea of hybridizing parrots and just need some reassurance that it wont happen with my birds.

My question is should I just get a male or would a female be fine.

You'll be fine as long as they are not housed together. They may become close friends, they may hate each other, they may tolerate each other. Mating and rearing chicks.........I'd not worry about.

Parrots that breed usually have to have perfect conditions (especially the larger parrots), they need quiet, peace, a nesting box, temps and lighting just right, the years to mature and bond, and time together.

You really have little to worry about. Cross your fingers they become friends.

There is a lady in my town, she has 27 free flying macaws (both sexes) in her home. All live uncaged, have access to the indoors and outdoors.......not one baby!

Breeding doesn't just happen.

Congrats on your future new Grey.
