okay so i just adopted a new baby terrier
and she is the cutest thing ive ever seen!
well i brought him home and all he did was cuddle and play and we just had the darnedest time together. of course, this was all before i introduced her to my kittens...
see my old cat had a few kittens recently, and i was raising them until they were old enough to adopt out...
so one day, i finally put my puppy in the same room as the kitten
i leave for a split second to get something to eat, and when i return, im short one kitten.
so i search and i search and i cant find it, then right when i turn around to open the door to leave i see a dead kitten completely mangled and rotting behind the door! i was mortified
but i thought nothing of the pup being involved..
2 days later, i was short 3 kittens
then i found my puppy attacking the youngest kitten
it was too late =(
i had 12 kittens, im down to 3.
what do i do?
get rid of the puppy or the kittens?
i mean its just the puppies nature to attack
i cant blame it
i mean weve all killed something, right?
so what do i do?

Keep them separated! You should never assume a new animal is OK with other animals. Supervision is always necessary. How old are the kittens? When will they be old enough to adopt out? How could you not think about the puppy if you see a mangled kitten behind your door? I'm just curious.. What did you think it was?

i wish i could, but the damned puppy can climb anything!
the kittens are 2 weeks old
getting close
and i never really thought it out
i mean
cats could do themselves out i suppose

No, cat's don't tend to commit suicide. What do you mean???
Keep them in a room where you can close the door. I guarantee he hasn't learned how to climb a door. Nor can he open a door.

what i mean is young cats tend to be a little too curious and get themselves smashed.
i coulda opened the door a LITTLE too hard?
and its a one bedroom apartment
virtually no doors except for the entrance and the bathroom (which is kinda a sliding door)

Wouldn't you know if you opened a door a little too hard? I would think you would try to be careful, if you knew kittens were around.
Either way, cats don't commit suicide. Puppies need to know cats are friends. Kittens don't go around and try to be 'smashed.' It sounds like you need to pay a little bit more attention to what's going on. Are you getting your cat spayed so she can't have anymore kittens?

Also, you NEED to figure out a way to keep the pup separated. If it means keeping them in your bedroom and the pup out. So-be-it. Keep him in a crate/kennel if you are not able to supervise him. What I'm trying to say is they HAVE to be separated. At least for a few more weeks until you can find the kittens a home.

How old are you?
How is spaying a cat disgusting? It's necessary to prevent many illnesses. Have you ever been around a pyometra? It's an infection of the uterus. Now THAT is disgusting. IMO, you and your vet need to have a little chat.

she should be able to have his kittens whenever he wants to

If the kittens are just now 2 weeks old, there's no way they are old enough to get around enough to get behind a door that's being opened. And they've got 6 more weeks before they are old enough to go to new homes.
You don't say how old the pup is, but a terrier is a hunting dog. They were bred to catch rats. The dog is only doing what is instinctive for it. You should keep a close eye on the dog when it is around the kittens. And make sure it knows that the kittens aren't chew toys.
And why do you think getting your cat spayed is disgusting? It is for the health of the cat, and would keep you from having this problem with your pup in the future. What do you think spaying is? I'm confused.

How is being a supporter of reducing the pet over-population being a right to lifer?
<she should be able to have his kittens whenever he wants to> when WHO wants to? The tom? he could care less about kittens, he just wants to mate when she's in heat. You are setting your cat up for all kinds of health problems by thinking it's ok for her to get pregnant every time she goes into heat. Not the least of which is an early painful death, from being totally used up by litter after litter of kittens.

Then maybe you should just get rid of the dog. Sorry, but your comments don't sound like a 32 year old. They sound like the comments a child would make.
If you would think about your cat's health and the fact that she isn't getting to choose. When she goes into heat, instinct and nature take over. She isn't thinking "Hey I want to have some kittens!" Animals don't think. They just react.

I understand where you're coming from. But they don't have a choice like we do. We choose to have intercourse to have a baby. They have a drive that they can't avoid. It's not like they can say no. There are way too many puppies and kittens out there to have someone let their cat procreate because they don't know any better.
I'm sorry that you were offended, but I'm a little offended that you've let 9 of your kittens die because you thought they had a natural tendency to be 'smashed.' IMO that is not responsible ownership.

No, you can't spay her at home. It's surgery. A vet puts the cat under anesthesia and then removes her uterus and ovaries. That way no more heat cycles, no more kittens, healthy female cat for life.
ferJenna
05-29-2008, 11:04 PM
A spay is a surgery. You cannot do it at home. They remove the uterus and the ovaries, and prevent them from going into heat. When your cat keeps you up all night when she's yowling, that's what heat is.

these are my first pets
i dont know much about how to handle them
also
my neighbor is interested in adopting the puppy
thing is, i dont know if i trust him
he works with power equipment (chainsaws, drills) alot during the day, would that not be good for the puppy's hearing?
plus he paved over the front of his lawn and hes not home alot
what should i ask him?
should i interview him?
im sure he would be more fit
i mean hes already got a few puppys

Do your neighbor's puppies seem healthy and happy? Does he spend time with them? If he doesn't obviously mistreat his dogs, like hitting them all the time, or never feeding them or giving them water, then maybe it would be a good thing for him to adopt the pup. Until you have a little more experience with pets, perhaps it would be better for you to stick with one at a time. And definitely, when the kittens are 8 weeks old, find a vet to get the momma spayed.

No offense, but like I mentioned before, your responses sound more like a child than an adult. I understand that you are new to pet ownership, and I'm not sure if there's really anything you could interview your neighbor about. If his pups keep running away, either he doesn't have a secure yard, which would mean your pup would eventually run away also, or he doesn't take care of the pups he's already got.
Try to keep the pup away from the kittens, and perhaps see about finding someone else who can take her.

If you were a TRUE pet lover, your animals would have been to the vet, and you wouldn't be letting your dog kill kittens, and you wouldn't be locking your dog outside of your apartment.
Being pro choice has NOTHING to do with spaying/neutering animals. You must be PRO death sentence as well, because that's exactly what you are doing by letting your animals reproduce. You are sentencing countless other animals, and probably some of your babies to death because there aren't enough homes for all animals.
If you can't do something as simple as closing a door to keep animals separated, then give all your pets away. How rediculous. I can't imagine any landlord allowing that many cats and a dog in a 1 bedroom apartment anyway. Does your landlord really allow all those animals, or don't they know?
You should have done your research before getting a pet. It's not like you got a new couch - you need to be educated BEFORE you get a pet. If you were, you would have learned that most terriers and cats DO NOT MIX. Terriers have such a strong instinct to chase and kill small animals, it's almost overpowering. I know because I have a terrier, and 2 cats. He leaves the house cats alone, but when we take him to the farm, barn cats are fair game for attacking.
You need to decide who you want to keep, the dog or the cat. Take them to the local humane society or shelter. There they have the best chance of going to a loving home where they will get the best care.
And for goodness sake, take your animals to the vet! You should not be having litters of kittens since you know nothing about raising babies! I bet when you had your daughter, you were at a hospital and you received proper medical treatment. I can bet that you didn't do that for your momma cat.
