I have seen some dogs wearing ID tags that says that they are vaccinated for rabies. Where are these tags to be found? Or have they just gone to petco or some other store and gotten it engraved them selves (the owners that is... ;) )?

When the vet gives them the shot, they issue the tag. It has the vet office number, and an individual id number for the dog.

I see. Thank you! Can I get it anyway, although I vaccinated my dog in an other country?

No I think the vet has to be the one to vaccinate to be able to give out the tag. Mine have the "Get me Home" website and number on them. It's free to register, so I figured why not?

You should be given a tag when you take her in to get her next rabies shot...my guys get a new one every time they get another shot (new rabies id #)

Same here, when we bring my cousin's JRT for the second shot, he got new tag too.

You don't need the tag, if you have the paperwork from the vet saying Maja was given the vaccine. So I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you don't have the paperwork, you can call the doctor that gave it, and request a vaccination certificate. :)

I don't remember my vet every giving me a rabies tag . . .
I had to show the rabies certificate to get her licensed though.

Some vets may give out tags while others dont. My vet gave me rabies tags for both my dogs when vaccinated, but not for my cat.

i would think a tag was nessecary as the shot itself. I mean, if my dog got lost and had no tags, ect and ended up in a shelter, or bit someone - there are pleanty of shelters that kill now, ask questions later. Also you can not test for rabies on a live animal. You NEED to put it down and test the brain tissue for signs. To me, to keep your animal tagged with its rabies vaccine, or AT LEAST put the info on a microchip, then you are gambling with a life.

I think here in Texas in the case of a dog biting someone, the shelter will hold the dog in quarantine for ten days and if the dog shows no signs of rabies then they are released to their owner or put up for adoption, if possible.
The only time (that I'm aware of) that a dog is put down after biting is when it is continuing to show signs of aggression or obvious signs of rabies infection.

My dog does have a microchip. I hadn't thought about checking the site to see if I can add that info. That is a good idea.
The city only provides a license upon proof of rabies tag. So I think the city license tag functions the same way as proof of rabies as a rabies tag. At least in our area.

Where I am you have to have the actual certificate with the animals name and breed and sex. The tag alone wont get you a license.

Anne, that's how it is everywhere I've lived. They always go to a quarantine. Plus, if they're strays they go to a holding place for a certain amount of time until the owner claims it, then they're put up for adoption. If they're still aggressive, I still think they're given an alloted amount of time to be claimed.
Katie, that's how it is here and in CA. We always issued a certificate with our vaccine. We didn't give a tag unless the client asked for one specifically.

I think Lindsay is talking about a removable microchip on the dog's collar, the microchip that they inject under the dog's skin doesn't have the capacity to keep vaccination records.

My vet gives me the tag regardless, which I like because I like having the tags on their collars. The city wont just accept the tag however, because it is no proof that the specific animal you are applying for was the animal vaccinated. For example, I could get Levon his rabies shot, and then go get him a license, and the next day go back in and get Daniel a license with the same tag.

I was talking about a microchip. Some microchip companies not only allow you to put your name and address and contact into, but have a place for additional info about the dog if the person were to go to the website that the microchip is registered under, the medical info on the pet would come up. I will be getting one for my cat who has been vaccinated for Feline AIDS ebcause i would not want her being put to sleep if she were to get lost and i dont find her and her test produces a false positive
