Though my pet dog Beetle usually sleeps on his own bed or crate(whichever he likes: bed in the day time and crate at night which is kept open), but there are times when he comes to the bed too, sometimes for an afternoon nap with me. At night he loves his cosy crate. But yes, his bed and his crate are both in our bedroom :-))
Cheers,

My Chihuahua used to sleep in my bed. My new puppy sleeps next to me in his cage. My other Shepherd sleeps next to my parents and the two Jack Russells sleep in their bed.

Both of my dogs sleep with me. It's truly amazing how much space a 13 lb. Jack Russell can take up....

I can't let Jake sleep with me I have too many allergies, but he has his own bed right next to mine. The cats aren't supposed to sleep with me either, but who is going to tell a cat to get off the bed and stay off, lol, like they would listen, yeah right.

My puppies haven't earned that privilege yet. Once they are fully housebroken and I can trust them, the cats might let them share a spot in bed.
Once upon a time when I had 5 big dogs they all would try to fit in bed with us. Funny seeing 5 dogs, 2 people and about 7 cats trying to fit into a king size bed! LOL

04-28-2004, 02:59 PM
they are asleep on the bed right now...swayzee has to cover her head with pillows or blankets if it isn't pitch dark in here!! Boo is better about getting off the bed at night. swayzee is getting grumpy with age though! They take naps with me, but there just isn't the room for them to sleep there at night. We have a queen size bed and my husband, me, and two over 50 pound dogs don't make for a comfy night!

Augie sleeps with us, sort of. My husband usually goes to bed first, and Augie joins him until I get home. Then, we hang out together for a bit, and when I go in to bed, he goes to his own bed, on the floor, next to ours. In the morning, when my husband goes to work, Augie jumps in bed with me and we sleep for a while. However, on the rare occasion that my husband and I go to bed at the same time, it is definitely a challenge, since Augie cuddles up right in between us and DOES not move!

This is too funny... our 4 dogs and 3 cats allow us to share the beds with them.. we all have to fight for a spot LOL... we have all large breeds. The dogs usually dont stay very long because of their thick and double coats, they usually end up on the floor where its cooler... if hubby gets up for any reason, our 150 lb'er immediately gets in his place, with his head on the pillow... hubby tells me everytime to "save his spot" while he's gone, and everytime the dog jumps up in his place.. its a riot.

Our pitt bull sleeps with us...now that it is tick season i wish we hadn't started this tho! the 17 year old dog sleeps on the floor right next to the bed..the older one never chose to get on a bed..but the pup seemed to jump right up and never leave!

I'm getting a bigger bed when I get another dog, how's that for pathetic? I lucked out though, my 10-month old GSP has been at about 58# for a couple months now so he's a pretty petite guy. But he is the world's best cuddler!! He doesn't just want to sleep in the bed, he wants to cuddle up to me! It's sooo cute. Great in the winter too, his little 103 degree body warming me up! I even let him in my sleeping bag a couple weeks ago while camping in the moutnains, hahaha
Fonzie
04-29-2004, 04:45 PM
When I'm at home Fonzie sleeps in his kennel, which he seems to sleep really well in. When I stay at my boyfriends, Fonzie sleeps in bed with us, but usually none of us gets a good night sleep because Fonzie wakes up when his Daddy or I get up in the middle of the night and Fonzie usually wakes up at least once in the middle of the night on his own to either go potty or just because he's decided its play time.

Once Bodhi my Boston Terrier is housebroken, he will have the option to sleep where he pleases including my bed, he really seems to enjoy his current crate which doubles as his sleeping den; even when it's not time for bed. Once housebroken the crate door is coming off so he hang out in it when he chooses too.

My sister's dog, Alex, who is a medium sized mystery mix (He was found alone in the median of a highway with his umbilical cord stump still attached! Someone brought him to my sister's work in a shoebox!), has slept in her bed with her since he was a puppy. He's 11 years old now (and still acts like a puppy!). We've been camping with her and he slept with her in the tent. He growled at all the critters that walked by our tent all night. She says she feels safer when he is with her because he would warn her of any intruders. I must admit, I felt safer with the dog sleeping with us. If I had a dog, I'd let him or her sleep with me. My cat sleeps with me and my husband, but sometimes I have to shut him out of our room because he pounces and claws at our legs and keeps us awake. He gets the "nighttime crazies" when he's slept too much the previous day.

If he's not sleeping under the couch (thats how he got his name, it's dusty down there trust me) he's sleeping in my bed, no wait taking over the bed. And to wake me up he inserts a tounge in my ear, nice alarm clock isn't it?!

When my miniature schnauzer is scared, she will come into the room and paw at the bed. The look on her face is too irresistible to my husband (who swore the dog would NEVER be in our bed.) She has to lay right between the two of us. Otherwise she is content to spend the night in her own pillow.

I would love nothing more than to let my dog sleep with me, however as much as I love her, she is not my equal. That's a good way to teach them that they are.
She sleeps on her blankie right at the side of my bed. If it is storming, and she is scared....she is sure welcome in bed if that's what makes her feel safe.
Chips&Queso
06-24-2004, 08:53 AM
Chips and Queso both sleep with us. Usually one sleeps under my arm and the other sleeps under my husbands arm...right up next to us!
We decided when we got chips last week that it wouldn't be fair to let one up and not the other. I got Queso from a breeder than had 2 sister mini schnauzers and they treated the s&p differently. So we vowed never to do that.
They are soooo cute-

I would love for all four of my kids to sleep in bed with me but my husband wouldn't handle it well. As it is, we rotate our guys to being in the bedroom one at a time. I have dominant dog issues anyway and agree with SheppardMom on that, if they think thier dominant now, it would be scary when they take over the bed! Course my newfie gets to sneak in sometimes when my husband is gone, but he knows he is just a little ball of fluff and mom is the boss! When it is thundering outside, they all get to glom onto me, but we sit in the livingroom.

Yes, I do let my dog sleep in my bed.But only one of them cause the other two isn'table to.Because my puppy Jaylow he sleeps in the bath room he's being trained to use his puppy pee pads and if he isn't in the bathroom at night he will mess in the floor. And my oldest dog Muffy she isn't able to jump up on the bed she sleeps in her covers on the floor.Molly is the one who sleeps with me.She is very bosy about her bedding area she doesn't like to be messed with or touched if she is in my bed.And sometimes if like I touch her by mistake in the bed she will growl at me or some times she has even bit me.When she does this I tell her no and she doesn't do it again. She just an grouchy little dog when she in bed.
Well hope this helps...

My wife and I share our bed with our sheltie and our cat. We plan on getting a german shepherd dog in the near future, but don't necessarily want it on the bed. It will take up alot of room! But, we probably won't get away with letting the sheltie in the bed, but not the GSD. Eventually, it may wreak havoc with our "pecking order". So, I'm not sure what to do, but I have the feeling that we may just end up with a GSD in our bed, too. LOL.

Ripley sleeps on the bed once in awhile. maybe 2 days out of the week. He gets to choose on some nights if he wants to sleep with me or in his crate.. I'm a restless sleeper, so I think that's why he prefers his crate.

Capone the Boxer used to sneek unto the bed after I got out. Once my husband thought I was still in bed. When he turned around there was Capone lying with his head on the pillow giving him a big fat kiss. Now all the dogs sleep on the floor, because there's just not enough space on the bed for all of us.

Yes our 70# lab/retriever sleeps with us but we upset her too much by rolling over. However when we watch my parents 90# lab/retriever (our dogs brother) sibling rivalry kicks in and they BOTH have to sleep with us. By the way at my parents their lab isn't allowed on the bed or furniture, but when he hits my house it's striaght on the bed.

08-18-2004, 09:40 PM
Yes but I usually (by accident of course) end up twitching in my sleep and kicking him out of bed. However, his presence in bed has helped me a lot. I used to have this problem with sleeping in bed with another person. I was so used to sleeping on my own that having someone next to me was very disruptive to a good night's sleep. You could imagine what that did for my love life. :( But having Ben sleeping with me has helped me get over that and now I can't sleep without him next to me. Besides, in the winter he's a heck of a hot water bottle! Whomever I marry is gonna have to get used to sharing a bed with not only me but eventually two Goldens.

MinPinKalen
08-20-2004, 09:03 PM
My baby MinPin, Kalen, is only allowed to take afternoon naps with me and/or with my husband. She likes to cuddle up next to my knees or my feet under the covers. She is a bigtime cuddler!! The rest of the time though, she sleeps in her crate because she is nowhere near being housebroken yet. I am afraid that if we were to allow her to sleep in bed with us at night, we might roll over on top of her because we are restless sleepers!
KCCaneCorsos
08-21-2004, 05:38 PM
Occassionally one of my 3 will take a nap with me, but only one at a time. They are all too big and SUCH bed hogs to sleep with all night! They have to be sprawled out in the middle of the bed with they legs out straight and stiff as boards! Silly puppies...
MyMaggie
08-23-2004, 09:04 AM
We kennel Maggie whenever we leave and at night. However, I don't think she is used to it. I think she would be much happier just plopping down wherever as she does when we are home with her. Don't get me wrong, she doesn't fight us about going in the kennel but we want to make sure she is fully trained to not go inside and to not chew on things while we are asleep.

My boy Skippy is always sleepin with me on my bed and if I decide to sleep on the couch he jumps up on the couch and sleeps with me anywhere..... of course when ever my mom and dad are out of town Fargo ( approx. 145lbs), Babe ( approx 110-120), and Skippy ( 69lbs) they all wanna cram onto my full size bed... Fargo is like the size of a Mastiff, Babe is a Rottie, and Skippy is a labx there is very little room for me....I dont know why they dont sleep in my parents empty bed....

When I lived with my Mom, we had a cockapoo named Scruffy that would only sleep with my Mom. By morning my Mom would have about a foot of space running the length of the full size bed, while Scruffy was sprawled out. Oh, did I mention that Scruffy would push up against my Mom to get her to move? Once my Mom would move, then Scruffy would move, and by the morning - viola! 95% of the bed was hers! Anyway, Scruffy never slept with me, so you can imagine my surprise that when we got Romeo - I woke up one morning unable to move my feet, I look down and there he is, sound asleep. Now, whenever I spend the night I am the person that he prefers to sleep with, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Hi. At night Aiya and Hana have their respetive places, Aiya on her overstuffed pillow and Hana on the floor at the side closest to the door. When Aiya gets cold she climbs into bed and cuddles underneath the covers and curls into the backs of my knees. Then Boo Bear aka Hana, jumps up and lays on my legs. I know what everyone is saying about be scrunched up. I wake up in the fetal position sore and STIFF. But I don't have the heart to kick them off! When my boyfriend goes to work, he leaves before I do, Hana moves to his side of the bed and cuddles up with me. They are so funny. They both like to be covered up and tucked in. Zach and Shaggee stay downstairs because even as 8 and 9 yo they are still destructive and like to eat my shoes, etc.! Go figure.

Caine on the other hand is still too young to sleep on the bed for fear that he will pee on it during the night...however, last night he and zsa zsa both got to sleep with me and amazingly Caine slept all through the night with his puppy breath mouth right next to my face! :)

Hello again been a while i know
Well to tell you the truth i would let my dog to sleep in my bed he hoggzs the whole bed and hes a small dog and that he grouwls every time i move so .... anyways he has his own bed on the floor lol poor pups
d_broncochic
02-01-2005, 01:45 PM
my personal pup (louie) is smaller and also the alpha dog (by assignment)
i'm alright with him sleeping on the bed.....i'm alpha to him, and if he gets to hogging the bed he takes his cue from me and then goes on the floor to sleep.
Now Hunter is much larger and clumsy, he cant sleep on the bed (no in mine, though my son lets him sleep in his bed).
In my daughters room, neither are allowed on the bed, because its sybils territory.
So i guess it just depends on the family rung and territory as to whether they are allowed or not.

My two Jack Russells, Chihuahua, and cat sleep with my hubby and I on a queen size bed. At around 11pm my female Jack jumps off the bed to sleep on the recliner we have in the bedroom. My male Jack sleeps down at the bottom of the bed under the covers. The Chi sleeps between my husband and I. The cat tries to find room but usually falls off in the middle of the night because one of us rolls over and goes out on the couch. She's never on the bed in the morning just at night.

I don't let any of my animals sleep in bed with me. I read a book from a trainer that had worked with Oprah and her Dogs. She stated in her book that allowing your dogs to sleep in bed with you was a big no no. In dog packs the alpha has the highest and the best sleeping quarters and allowing your dogs to sleep with you in sends a message to them that they are equal. So I never allowed them to Sleep in bed. I do allow them on the living room furniture. Shayla sleeps on the register up against the wall in my bedroom while Kaylee prefers her crate. :p

Early night, my female dog is on the bed with me. Late night, she's off to her bed, early morning, she's asking to get back on the bed with me.
Male dog, night...floor or his bed. Morning, my bed...he never sleeps with me, but he does sleep in the room.

Every once in a while my black lab will climb in bed with me. Last week he decided to climb in bed with me then decided he wanted the whole bed to himself, so he planted all four paws in my back and shoved me off while I was sleeping. I slept in my recliner the rest of the night.

he planted all four paws in my back and shoved me off while I was sleeping.
haha, thats so funny cause thats what happened to me this morning. although, my dog is seriously like my brother so i shoved him back and we went back to bed. I have had some funny times with Kreutz in bed. I watched him fall off one time...saw the entire thing develope, took like 30 seconds until, WHAM! he was on the ground. I laughed. he shrugged it off and got back in bed, i think he felt like an idiot.
He's alright to sleep with cause i can move him wherever i want him. I just push and shove and he slides right on over. he knows its my bed and where i want to sleep he has to accept it.
I woke up the other day and he was sharing the pillow next to me, like a human. I started to pet him and he rolled over annoyed and continued to sleep. We ended up sleeping really really late. What can i say? hes a product of my upbringing. Maybe someday we'll share a beer and a hotdog over a football game :p
from every dog i've ever had in the family, i dont buy into the whole alpha dog sleeping thing (and ive owned an akita, german shepard and now a pit bull). I believe that if they know you're the alpha in the family, it's not gonna change becuase you spend 8 hours a night in the same place sleeping. Plus, put him in his place every now and then by moving him where YOU want him...kreutz knows its my bed and will conform to my sleeping position. If he doesnt, he gets pushed out of the way. And if there is company in my bed, god willing, than he spends the night, voluntarily, on the floor or the very foot of the bed. If you have a dog that knows his place with you, then i think you're not gonna have any problems sleeping with them.
Magnum
02-06-2005, 12:27 PM
Bu Bair sleeps with us at the foot of the bed. At 7 lbs., we don't even know she is there unless we look for her.......lol. She has a carpeted step stool that helps her to get in and out of bed, just in case she needs a drink at night (very rare). Magnum has his leather Bark-A-Lounger that is in our room. I posted a pic of it a while ago, but it is gone now. Magnum does his nightly rounds of the house every two hours (give or take), so he would be waking us up each time. Besides, 100 lbs getting out of bed that often would make for a grumpy family in the morning. :p

I didn't used to let my puppy sleep with us but since shes better at the whole potty thing (its gross to wake up in a puddle...eeww) i dont worry about that. She is a 9 1/2 month old shih tzu. She likes to curl up near my head...or lay on or next to my chest near my heart (i think she likes the beating) and behind my back, legs, and bottom. Either way she almost always has to touch me while sleeping unless shes taking up her daddy's side of the bed. :p

My soulmate sleeps on our full size bed with Cisco, our big Oscicat when Ester,my 16 year old, has to go to school during the week, she won't let him come and sleep with her during the week just on weekends when she doesn't have to go to school. He wants in and out of her room during the night and wakes her up to let him out, and then scratches on the door until she opens it so he can go back inside. So, then I sleep on the couch during the week with Gracie, my little female kitty, and she sleeps between my feet at nite, where she is most comfortable. Then, on the weekend, me and my soulmate sleep in our bed together, with usually one cat at the bottom of the bed. Are we not weird, or what? :p

My Labrador Sophie sleeps with my mum every night and wont allow my poor mum to have a sleep in, she will try and get her up by pretending to crew her slippers and leave it somewhere and when she does get up, she will lay across the pillows so that she cant get back in bed.
Sophie is so sly!, when she hears mum taking up the shower mat in the bath, she will jump off the bed as she knows its time for her walk!.

Well when Noel was a puppy she used to sleep above my head on the pillow. Now her favorite spot is under the covers behind my knees, so that she stays nice and toasty.
Oscar likes to be spooned. 99% of the time I am laying on my side, spooning Oscar and Noel snuggled behind my knees. My fiance will be perched dangerously on the other side of the bed, just about ready to fall off.
They stay until we all get too hot, then they get booted to their blankets on the floor, or Oscar will go to his chair- which is a big oversized overstuffed leather chair in the corner of the room that he took a liking to a little while back.
Its funny though, Noel and Oscar both like to sleep with their head under the bed. One time, I woke up in the middle of the night to a grunting noise and the bed shaking, Noel had gotten herself stuck when she tried to get up, not realizing she had worked herself completely under the bed. It was so funny, I had to roll her on her side and slide her out by her arms and she was so freaked out.

Yep! Asia sleeps with me! Infact she is right at my feet this moment spread out on her back. She is so sweet! I have put her blanket over mine though because I think she may be in heat. We have been waiting for her ear infections to heal before spaying her, since when I adopted her 1 1/2 weeks ago her ears were like one big scab. Now I think we may have to wait even longer because she has been spotting blood on my bed.:(

My cats used to sleep with us until we got our lab Bergie. Bergie is crate trained because she's a puppy. I may at a later time let her sleep in our room but not in the bed. Hubby has an air mattress for his MS and that would be a disaster to have Bergie's claws tear through it. :-)

Romeo and Beethoven sleep in bed with us. We have a unsually high bed (my bf did that to keep the dogs from jumping in the bed - now they cant jump off) After he starts snoring, I sneak them up 1 by 1 and tell them to be still and we all go to sleep.
They get me busted every night!! Knowing he doesnt want them up there, they of course sleep on him. He sleeps like a log anyway - but when he wakes up... lol
He'd never admit it- but he likes them up there as much as I do.

Brinkley Bing is allowed on the couch, but he steps down after few minutes  . He has 2 beds, one on each floor of the house. His bed upstairs is in our bedroom. Though he has his eye on our bed, he sleeps in his own bed.
He often ends up on the carpet, next to our bed, in the middle of the night. It gets too warm for him in his bed too. I wonder if he would prefer the refrigerator if he was a long-haired Saint Bernard :p.

Our bed is too high for Mel to get up. She would be up there in a heartbeat. Now that I have her flea problem down to a dull roar I would not mind. She has two big doggie beds. In the bedroom and livingroom. She is such a porker she would take up two thirds of my bed. The chicken-quaker tries to sleep with me but I won't let her. It is too easy to squish her if I were to roll over. What a nightmare that would be.

As Much as I love all my dogs, they sleep on the floor. I hate to be crowed and I have tired it and I am on the very edge when Gino stretches out. Here is a funny story on this. My husband and I have a 1 1/2 year old "toy" poodle (12 pounds... some toy!). Cy has always slept with us, in bed, between us, under the covers. Well... about a month ago, we got another poodle. From the start, I was adament that we would be more firm with her, and kennel train her. On the first night, we put the kennel in our bedroom, and of course she started to cry. I was ready for this and just wanted to let her cry herself to sleep... I knew that if we took her out, kennel training would never work. I asked my husband if he wanted me to put the kennel into the kitchen, so that he could fall asleep. He said that he would take her downstairs to the den until she got tired, then bring her back upstairs and put her in her kennel. Needless to say, at 5:00 in the morning, hubby and Cassie were still asleep on the couch. But wait! The story gets better... I decided that this was not going to happen again. I was not going to lose my husband to my poodle. So I told hubby that I didn't want him taking Cassie to the den at night anymore. (Background info: Our bed is a full size, antique, oak, VERY HIGH, bed.) Hubby was afraid that Cassie would fall off of the bed if we let her sleep on it, so he decided that we should disassemble the bed and sleep on the mattress on the floor. The communal sleeping pad was born. Mattress with pillows surrounding it on all sides. But wait... there is more! Hubby decided that he couldn't sleep with all 3 of us, so he is currently on the couch in the den, and Cy, Cassie, and myself are sleeping on the mattresses on the floor. We are saving to buy a king sized bed... hopefully for Valentine's Day, so I can have my husband back. So I guess the answer is Yes... I sleep with my puppies!

My dogs are allowed to sleep with me, but the furry collie only lasts 5 minutes- its too hot for her.
My beagle Pepper was terrified of all humans (including me:( ) when I got her at 3 yrs. old (3 years ago) and only by sleeping next to me did she gain the bravery she displays today. last year, she finally learned never to touch my pillow. LOL
At the crack of dawn the collie (87lbs) tries to wake me, but Pepper threatens to kill any dog that touches me- its hilarious, this 30lb beagle standing over me, snarling like a rabid dog-quietly, of course! Like I can sleep through that!
The cats never got on my bed until this latest foster (may become permanent) decided that I love him. Now, its Beagle, Chow, cat, cat, cat.
Or, cat, Beagle, cat, Chow, cat, or any combination thereof!
Great post. Lots of funny replies. My dog and cat both sleep on the bed with me and as uncomfortable as it sometimes is, I wouldn't have it any other way. The funny thing is, we have this huge bed and we're only using half of it. If they'd just...spread...out...some...Ha! And if that's not enough, as I type this (and most things), my cat is sleeping on my computer desk, between me and the keyboard...:) At least I know my place, I'm only here to serve my animals.;)

My baby girl (mixed Boston Terrier/Corgi) sleeps in bed with me. She starts at my head, later will go to the end of the bed, then will go next to me with her back against mine, then migrates to the empty pillow next to my head, then finally settles down in front of the fan.
Sometimes she just lays right on me, climbs up me and sleeps on my chest. Sometimes she stretches out across my legs. Whatever she wants, and whatever makes her comfortable!

Hi there,
You know what, if you can't share your bed with your dog, who can you share it with? LOL I would rather share my bed with my dog than with a man, so that shows you what kind of love life I have, right? LOL At least your dog won't yell at you if you snore or push you over (well, that's debateable - depends on how big your dog is). I say yes, let the dog sleep with you, as long as it doesn't smell, then you're okay and your dog will love you for it!

The primary concern about letting the dogs inside the house and up on the bed is the hair that they often leave around the house. If you truly want your dog close to you, I suggest getting them proper dog clothes that will help control the hair fall. There are customized dg robes and T-shirts to fit your dog. Letting your dog sleep in your house should not worry you. However, you should not be too lax about letting your furry friend into your personal space. The first concern should be your health. Dogs leave strands of hair around that may trigger allergic reactions or go into your food and water. What you can do is to let your dog wear a coat while inside your house so you can let them roam around trouble-free.

#1 Why would you have a dog, or let it sleep in your bed, if you had allergies?
#2 What you can do is to let your dog wear a coat while inside your house so you can let them roam around trouble-free. I have to say this is the most bizarre piece of advice I've ever heard.

HAHA ohhh da pirate!
Ours are allowed on the bed. We have them jump up on it when we're vacumming or if we're preparing food so they aren't in our faces. Every now and then one or the other will jump up in the middle of the night, but more often than not they both sleep on the love seat. Or one sleeps next to the bed and the toher on the couch. It varys. We have no problem letting them in our bed, but they're trained well enough that they jump off immediately if we tell them to. Fred actually prefers the couch and only likes coming into bed with us when we're awake.
I think I kick him at night hahaha. poor fred.
And katie - I completely agree.
And unless you have allergies your dogs sleeping in bed with you is not a health concern. Or if the dog has fleas or worms, and if that is the case, you should be taking the dog into the vet to get defleaed and dewormed anyway!

Most definitely. Zack will curl up either in my belly or at the foot of the bed. Zeke likes to be between us and if he gets too warm, he will jump off and sleep in the bed that was Harley's.
