So we got our first call of the spring today - 3 kittens, born March 26. Mom has disappeared - the lady who was feeding her suspects either hit by a car or "disposed of" by her unappreciative neighbors.

There are two boys and one girl... obviously, the calico is the girl.

This is the most energetic of the three. He doesn't have a name yet - but we'll come up with something!

This little guy is the biggest - and the best, so far, at figuring out the nipple on the bottle. He even has the patented bottle-fed-kitten "Ear Wiggle" going on. Tooo cute. His name is Gizmo - he is stunningly similar to that cute little gremlin.

This is the little girl. She had us a bit concerned initially, because she was so lethargic and sleepy. When I came in for their 3rd feeding, she was shaking - almost like a seizure. She seemed fine as soon as I touched her though, so I'm thinking it was just regular kitten wiggles. I hope. Either way, she has really pepped up and was even playing pretty rough with the other two. I'm pretty sure she's going to end up a long haired kitty - her fur is already silky.

All three of them have eye infections, but their noses are COMPLETELY clear, and from what I can hear their lungs are too. Mom was feral - the only un-spayed female the lady knew about. SHe's been feeding mom and several other "outside" cats for seven years now, and really seems to want to do all she can to help them.

For now, the kittens are on eye ointment and KMR. I am going to give them a couple days to adjust, and then they will have to be wormed. We have to keep them separate from our other cats - we have no way of knowing if they have any other diseases. But for now, they are chubby, FLEA AND TICK FREE, and seem mostly healthy. I haven't gotten them to poop yet, but I'm guessing, since I'll be most tired at the 3AM feeding, that they'll all go then.

And, for any of you who may be wavering on this, PLEASE, PLEASE, do whatever you can to ensure that as many cats as possible are spayed or neutered. The picture I'm attaching here made me cry... this poor girl's eyelids are so inflamed, she can't even get them all the way open. In less than 24 hours, she's lost her mom, had a well intentioned but misinformed person take pity on her and her brothers and give her cow's milk, been on a 40 minute car ride, and had to learn to eat from a bottle and pee for a washcloth. Take a good look at this face, and tell me that a spay, which can prevent many THOUSANDS of kittens, is not worth it.

What pretty babies. I'm sure they'll all come along just fine, and find loving homes.

That last photo...she looks so sad! I know that you'll take good care of her and she'll be a happy healthy girl in no time. You rock for taking in these kitties and looking after them :)

Great job for taking in these babies! Bottle feeding is such a commitment and it great that you're willing to do this. I have one that looks a lot like your little Calico girl. You can check them out under "mom with no ears and babies" link.

It very fortunate that someone saw them and grabbed them up. You are so very right about neutering and spaying. Kitten season is upon us and the amount a preggy cats running around here is just crazy. Within the next two months all the raccoons and coyotes are going to be having a lot of easy catch suppers.

That's the unfortunate truth. We took in a litter of kittens last year after the momma was killed by a raccoon who wanted the kittens, it's so sad. :(

kyukidojen-I just remembered that I've used plain old saline solution to help rinse crusty, goopy eyes and it did work a few times. The little one isn't going to like it but you can give it a try.
