...well, I've had this rash on my hands and forearms for a few days. Caladryl and Steroid Sprays aren't doing a thing...so, one of the doctor's told me that it may be time for a human doctor to have a look.

So, away I went...and guess what!? ...I've got MANGE!

Sarcoptic Mange, to be exact. So, for the past couple of days, I've been spreading it around my clinic...to all my patients and all my cowokers. Hopefully, the mites are burrowed deep enough that I didn't share my new found friends with anyone.

Now...how's that for benefits and job perks?! :p

Oh Tiffers........you poor baby. You've had your share of hard times.

I didn't even know people could contact mange from their pets. Learn
something new everyday.

Get better fast.

Nice work...but my question is how did the vet miss that?

...Scabies in humans is entirely different visually than Scabies in dogs. It looks nothing like each other, though it is the same mite. I do have a cream anti-mite thing I'm supposed to do, as well as boiling my bedsheets and most my clothes.

Scabies, or Sarcoptic Mange, is the only mange a human can get from his/her pet. I, however, got them from someone else's pet. Figures...I feel sooooo gross...lol.

Do you have to stay away from your pets? Can you pass it on to them?

TIFFERS

Sue, there seems to be quite a few theories on the subject. I believe that you can give it back to them. I got it from an animal, why can't they get it back?! There's also some that say the mites burrow so deep in human skin, they don't come back out until they die...so, who knows?!

OMG Tiffers! I got that once when I was a kid.

I got it by riding a dirty horse in from the back field to get her once a year check up & shots. It was summer & I had shorts on, so my legs were in direct contact with the animal. I was so miserable from that!

Crossing my fingers for you that they have something out these days that makes it go away faster than when I had it.

Cyber hugs!

OMG that certainly stinks! And you know whats scarier? I get something like that on my hands and wrists too when I wear gloves at work or when I'm out in the sun too much. I was told by someone in the medical feild it looks like a hypersensitive reaction to sun (can't remember the name right now) but I got it last month and hadn't been in the sun but have worn different gloves at work. Now I'm a little scared...mange?? Could Lucky have mange and I don't know it and I contracted it??? I would know if he had it right?? (but this happend all the time before I got Lucky)

Anyway...didn't mean to ramble, I hope it goes away for you...QUICKLY :)

TIFFERS

...Lucky's a cat, and the type of mite Lucky would have is different than what I've got. Canine vs. Feline. It is possible to get it from the cat, and from what we've read...it's possible to give it back as well. After the one treatment, I'm not longer supposed to be contagious, but I've had it for a week...medicating with all kinds of stuff...so who knows who'll get it next.

If it's intensly itchy...seems there's a long stripe/streak of hive/lesion...it could be. The doctor I went to, just looked at it...and said, "Yep. It's Scabies." Especially since we just had an infested pup in the clinic a little over 2-3 weeks ago.

photosensitive dermatitis :) ...but I'm convinced that lots of medical-type humans resort to that when they can't determine the cause of a rash!

actually i think it's a reaction to latex gloves, but maybe i'll go see the dermatologist next time it flares up just to be sure. i never had a latex allergy before, but that certainly doesn't mean i can't have one now.

Tiffany, I'm glad you were able to find out the cause, as icky as mange sounds! I did tons of research on rashes because I had one on my arms and legs that lasted for more than four months. I was miserable. My doctor (soon to be my former doctor) just glanced at me and called it "photo-sensitive dermatitis". What a crock...he told me to continue what I was doing and wait for it to go away.

It was during my research that I found that the streaks/stripes your hands have suggest a burrowing parasite. Poor thing.

Well, it still itches...INTENSLY...I thought it was supposed to stop itching after I did the 'full body' cream...I could be wrong.

TIFFERS
04-14-2008, 07:57 PM
...well, Sarcoptic Mange it is NOT! We're in luck! ...well, I don't know about that, really.

The rash has progressively spread up my arms almost to my armpits...called the doctor back and told her the mange cream did nothing, and she called in a steroid cream for me.

So, no little friends crawling around in my skin! :]

Not sure if it would counteract what you are already doing, but what I got for the blister beetle itch I had last month was Calagel. It has a gel formula of calamine, so it stays in place, and it dries up the blisters and stops the itch. I thought the itch between my fingers was going to drive me insane that first night, then we put the get on it, and within a week it was all dried up and fading.

...I've used Gentocin, Caladryl, Super-Dry, Permethrin, Aloe Wipes, Aloe/Oatmeal Lotion...all kinds of topical goodies that have done squat. They put me on oral Steroids now...

I contracted Scabies while working at a grocery store in high school, apparently from a contact with a customer. I was given a perscription cream that had something odd like mercury in it. I contracted horrible ringworm (m. cannis) from infected kittens in the summer of 06 and had to take meds that can cause liver damage. Never a dull moment...I feel for you, I know how bad it itches.

when i use to handle the rats at the pet shop i worked at i would get a rash kinda like that, i started cutting the rats nails and it seemed to go away, the thing with something like that is the rats cut your hand the mites get to burrow in and yay infection fun time eh lol even worse then we use to clean with bleach no gloves the burn i still remember lol, hope you get better:)

I thought I'd got it once from a pig that we rescued at the shelter. Turned out I was just allergic to piggie! But I feel for you because it itched like mad for weeks! I hope the pills work. So if its not mange what is it?

P.S. I love the Nintendo controller wallet!

Is there any chance you could have picked up Poison Ivy, Oak or Sumack (?) from any of the animals you've handled? That's kind of what it looks like whent I get it. I know it's winter, but the worst case of Poison Ivy my husband has every had happened in January. He handled a piece of locust wood that was being split for firewood and it had the remainder of a vine wrapped in the bark.

...well, the oral steroids have done WONDERS. :) ...I'm only on the second day, too!

Seems we don't know what it is. I've not tried the Kwell stuff, in fact...I've never heard of it. What is it?

I was treated for all the poison stuff, too. Nothing helped. I do have EXTREMELY sensitive skin...there's something about soap (body wash, laundry detergent, etc) that makes my skin break out...which sucks...because I can't run around neked and stinky now can I!? ...well,I could...but I won't.

Here is the info for the Kwell Lotion http://www.drugs.com/cons/kwell-topical.html

Since it did not end up being scabies you most likely won't use it, but just FYI anyway. Glad to hear something is working for you.

poor you...hope things are working out and that you're healing...
i had a horrible rash on my back about a month almost 2 months ago....i NEVER EVER get rashes so i rushed to my doctor the 2nd day and thank goodness i did...it was shingles!!
seriously who get's shingles in their 20's with a healthy immune system....the doctors were baffled.

krazy4birds
04-20-2008, 03:17 AM
OOOOH JMar..... do I feel sorry for you. I had the shingles when I was about 40 and I have never forgotten the pain. And by the way....shingles are not age related issues lol It is contracted through the same virus as the chicken pox. At least that is what I was told. I had a light case and it was very very painful. Made me appreciate the cases I have seen that are covering a much larger area than mine were. I had them on my right shoulder and shoulder blade.

JMar0408
04-20-2008, 09:36 AM
wow mine started just below my right shoulder blade...just a small patch there and then it continued under my right arm to my right breast....very small because i caught it in time and started antivirals on the 2nd day.

and yeah i know it's caused by the chicken pox virus's reawakening lol it's just that it's usually in people in their 50's or if people have immunodeficiency problems such as cancer (immunodeficient due to chemotherapy) or AIDS...or whatever other immunodeficiency causes are out there. So yeah they were just shocked that I was a healthy 21 yr old with shingles.

and the pain was sooooo unbearable that i woke up one morning around 5am to get ibuprofen and fainted twice in the kitchen....when my dad checked the kitchen after i told them it was a complete mess the trash can fell over and i apparantly pulled the fridge about 1 foot out of place.

anyway don't mean to hijack the thread....but i do sure hope that your doctors can figure out what's going on with your arms there!

TIFFERS
04-20-2008, 09:53 AM
Shingles can also be brought on by a lot of Stress, which lowers the immune system. One of our doctor's got them on her face while she was going through a divorce.

04-20-2008, 02:54 PM
Oh wow...on the face no less..... where ever it comes from it hurts like the dickens.
I hope you find your cure before long Tiffany. It looks very irritated and looks like it is staying on the vein..is that just a coincidence?

TIFFERS
04-20-2008, 03:23 PM
...well, it's all gone now besides some minor scarring. It only followed the vein on that one arm, the other is swarmed my hand...so, who knows!?

glad your arms are better...still sucks that you don't know what it was....i hate not knowing. and yeah i knew about the stress factor in shingles but it's weird cuz i wasn't stressed... you'd figure i'd have gotten them last year when i was super depressed, not eating, and decided to leave my school
