View Full Version : Snakes!
I was out in the yard a few minutes ago & spotted this guy in one of the hanging plants.

Along comes the resident black snake to do his job of keeping the other snakes away.

Sure enough the little guy boogied pronto when he saw the black snake climbing the plant next to him.

Nice finds :) I will make sure to show Kyle when he gets home... I know he'll be thrilled.

Perhaps he can identify the little snake in the hanging pot??

Wow! Thats neat!
What kinds of snakes are they? The black one looks really bad ass!

The big black one is a Black Snake (a.k.a. Black Racer). He is non-poisonous and unless you are another snake (or a nosy dog) he is generally non-aggressive. He mostly hangs out and chases other snakes away. He moves wicked fast.
I have no clue what the little guy might be, I am hoping someone here might know. Judging from the shape of his head I will guess he is also non-poisonous, but he was fairly aggressive once he spotted me taking his pic.
Here are couple more of the Black Snake.

Nice pics. I also have a "resident" black snake but I keep running him off because he hangs out by the bird feeders. Could the visitor be a king snake?

I don't think it is a kingsnake. He didn't have that much color. He is sort of striped, but the kingsnakes I have seen had much bolder striping than this guy.

We're thinking the first one is a type of garter, Thamnophis species (?)
Second could be a black rat or racer, hard to say.
Neither is probably a kingsnake, but we can't say for sure from the pictures. Either way they are harmless - should help keep the rodent population in check.

Oh my god! I'd be looking for a new house...preferably in another state. I like to keep a healthy distance from our ophidian neighbors. :(
