View Full Version : Eating disorder?
My cat just adopted me when I moved into this new house. Looks like he is a neutered male. He was skin and bones when he first arrived and since I have been feeding him he has gained some good pounds. He ate voraciously. The problem is that he would throw up after eating and the food brought up was almost in the whole chunks that were earlier in his dish. He also chews on my lemon grass quite a bit. I am wondering if he has a stomach disorder or the grass is bothering him or if the food is the wrong kind. I don't see any hairballs although he is constantly licking his fur. The past week his appetite has waned but he still looks fairly healthy even though he often heaves up what he has just eaten. Should I change his diet or be concerned of another malady?

Hi Loti and welcome :)
It sounds to me he may be eating too fast since it sounds like he's gone without food before you came along. You might try feeding him smaller amounts 3 or 4 times a day. Has he seen a vet lately?. There may be medical problems.. its so hard to say. Try giving him cat food for sensitive tummies and if it doesn't get any better, I'd take him to the vet. Best of luck to you.. you're an angel for taking this little guy in ;) .

Is his stool runny? Or does he strain a lot when he tries to go? It sounds like he might just be eating too fast, Just like Squaw said. But you might want to take note of his stools to determine if you should get him to a vet ASAP.
Also cats enjoy chewing on grass, and they often do it to make themselves vomit. I would suggest a hairball treatment for him. Either find a food that has hairball treatment in it, or buy it separately. The food I give my cats treats hairballs, but I also give them Malt because they LOVE it, and it is a treat for them.
But if your kitty has not seen a vet since you found him. It's a good idea to get him to a vet anyway.
Good luck!
Thanks NiteRose and Squawksx3 for your suggestions. He was literally starving when I found him and he barely chews his food. I started moistening his food just a bit and giving him less. Seems to be better. I bought a more expensive brand too and he likes that better. His stools are firm and that end seems fine.
I was giving him hairball treats, too. Boy is he a lucky cat.

So glad to hear he's doing better :) . Animals will inhale food when they have experienced starvation... it should get better as time goes by and he realizes the food will keep coming on a regular basis... they also will eat grass if they have upset stomachs or lack minerals and is normal. He is very lucky to have found you ;) .

Glad to hear he is doing better :)
My sister adopted a cat that someone left outside her office one night, she was a bit afraid at first, so when she would finally come out from under the bed, she would scarf down her food and water real fast. She would vomit, and then run in fear of it
