I have a full cover on Dexter's cage at night, do you prefer to crack it a little so there's a little light that goes in or you keep yours completely dark? if so what's your reason?

Pumpkin won't sleep with a cage cover. Sophie won't sleep without one. If a light is left on it is to prevent night frights.

My budgies love to sleep totally covered....they fear nothing.
My tiel likes to have her cover partially opened and I leave a little night light on because she thrashes and has night frights without it. Cockatiels are known for doing this.
My pionus parrot was never covered before coming to live with us, but I do cover him completely and he loves it. He isn't afraid of anything at night.
I believe that having birds sleep with a covered cage give them a sense of security or of being in a nest. I also believe that they sleep better when covered and it prevents drafts from reaching them in the winter.

all of mine are covered except the macaw. this includes cockatiels, budgies, loves, and sun conure. there covers do not totally cover the cage there is an inch or two at the bottoms.
The mac likes to sit on the outside back corner of his cage top. (it is open all the time unless i am going to be gone for the entire day).

I don't cover my birds at all. I used to cover our cockatiels but this caused more night frights than when they were uncovered. I tried to cover Bijou's cage, but she kept chewing at the cover and I was scared that she might ingest it and choke on the material. Anyway, Bijou and Rio sleep very well at night, uncovered, without any incidence of night frights. As far as getting enough sleep, I think they do because they are never "grumpy" in the morning.

I cover all my birds. My cockatiel, also has night frights,I only have a small sheet on her cage and always a night light. I also play music all night for them. Classical. My birds love opera as well,so do I! This is their night time calmness. They are so happy when its bed time. They all run up to their bed get all cozy. If I do something different they will all let me know. They scream at me if I don't wind up their music box, they have had since baby's. Well they are all still bab'ys. I don't mean they get mad, they just let me know if something seems different.

Gail,
That sounds so relaxing - playing classical music all night for them and their music boxes. I need to remember to start something like that for our birds.

lol...that's similar to what my birds do in the morning when I don't put their radio or favorite cd on. They flap and scream, then stop when I play their favorites.
Amazing.

Great idea. i never thought of playing the music at night.
I play 'quiet' classical during the afternoon very low when i lay down. it seems they have to get quiet to hear it.! they get quiet for awhile and everyone takes a nap!.
